This bowl was found half buried in sand on a beach in Eastern Canada. I have the etching on the bowl sketched to make identifying it easier. If you can provide me with any details on the bowl that would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
Your plate reminds me of the Ming- marked brass (?) ones that turn up now and again. They are variously described as being Ming up to later 20th c - they aren't Ming, but could be first half of the 20th c.
Often it is said they are Chinese, and I don't know enough about metal to disagree, but now looking at yours, and having just seen others on line claiming to be Japanese, I am wondering if that isn't the case.
Either way, I think it is possibly of this type below but I would also like to see the back, please.

I wonder how it got to the beach? Left over from a beach picnic or someone dropped it off a ship? Forget the Vikings and Vinland and St. Brendan, it was the Chinese. You have a good cocktail story, especially good as the evening progresses.

Sorry I don't have a photo of the back but the artist did etch his name in "CHINN". I do have better photos, you can see attached. Pretty sure it is made of brass. The beach is located in Nova Scotia near Sheet Harbour, a very unpopular beach that is not travelled, strange for it to be found there. The beach is not the typed you'd picnic on, and the location is not near any shipping lanes or fishing grounds. Ok, so we think it is Japanese, mid 20th century.
Does anyone know where could be a database I can search for the artist, "CHINN"? I searched the ones that where easy to find, I found some Chinns, but none fit, not that I could tell.
Can anyone tell me any details about the warrior riding the mule, I think it's a mule, don't think it's a horse.
I was able to identify the type of weapon he is carrying, it is a Naginata, but that about ends my arm chair internet search, any other assistance would be appreciated.

The inscription 'CHINN' does sound Chinese, doesn't it.
As for a database I think it's problematic. Since there were hundreds of thousands of various artists being either Japanese or Chinese.
Only the top known artists are noted with their history/story.
To my eye the horse does look a bit peculiar as does the weapon. Does this really depicts a Japanese warrior. Or is it a chinese artist interpretation of a Japanese warrior withour reference? The weapon looks Chinese.
But I am not an expert on asian armory. I would have thought a Japanese warrior would have used a samurai sword.

Thanks for getting back to us, that is good to know as I always thought these were Chinese but I have not seen a plate with that written on the back, only seen it on bowls.
I guess my recent search where sellers said Japanese was a result of their being swayed by the decoration, maybe like me, they can't differentiate between weapons. Thanks Mark, that is a usual observation. I will attempt a mental note of it. 😊
