This is a bowl I use for drinking tea. The seller said it was jadeite. I have another bowl made from Siberian nephrite and it looks rather similar. Is there a way to discern jadeite and nephrite?
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
You raised a very interesting question that I get asked a lot about.
Without getting technical etc the following is my interpretation in short.
Both jadeite jade and nephrite jade come in various colours. Jadeite jade comes in more color variations than it's cousin nephrite jade. This often is a tell-tale sign in distinguishing between the two stones.
Jadeite jade is tougher than nephrite jade. Jadeite is also a more denser stone than nephrite. Jadeite is 3.30-3.38. Nephrite is 2.9-3.03.
Jadeite jades structure is made up of grainy crystals. Nephrite is made up of a fibrous material that interlock in a matted finish. The composition is different between the two variables. Nephrite are soft and fibrous whereas jadeite structure is made of grain like crystals making it more dense and harder than nephrite.
So what does all of the above mean. What am I rambling on about.......I still don't understand what's the difference?
Very simply with the aid of your loupe. The surface of nephrite jade will be more greasy silky or waxy.
Jadeite jade will be vitreous to sugary.
The surface of jadeite jade will look under the aid of a 10x loupe to be rocky uneven surface. Similar to the surface of the moon. This is primarily a indicator of natural untreated jadeite jade.
Nephrite jade on the other hand will look more silky and smooth. The difference between the two will be strikingly different upon examining with a loupe.
I hope that the above is a short answer to your question on how to tell the difference.
Mark
Hi Mark, thanks a lot for the information. It’s dark now but I will look at both bowls tomorrow in daylight.
Birgit
Hi Mark, I looked at both bowls with a 40x loupe. Though one bowl is polished to a high gloss and the other rather matted, under magnification both surfaces looked more or less similar. No grains visible. So they are probably both Nephrite. Thank you for telling me the difference.
Birgit
@imperialfinegems You have a funny idea of not "getting technical" ! At any rate, after reading your description of the differences between the two, I am left wondering why they are both considered types of jade since they are so different? They seem like totally different stones. Answer me that one when you have the time.
Jade has been known/used for about 7000 years.
It was only since about 1860 when it was discovered that there were in fact two variations. Nephrite and jadeite. Prior to that they were thought to be the same at least from a western perspective. Not entirely sure what the Chinese thought about the differences during the later Qianlong period.
Nephrite jade and jadeite jade are from the same close knit family. Hence the correct term of jadeite jade rather than jadeite. The generic term for both is jade.
Nephrite can be found in a number of countries. Whereas for example imperial jadeite can only be found in Myanmar (Burma).
They both look very similar with only an experts eye to tell them apart at a glance.
