Hi all,
I just need someone to slap me and tell me this is fake and to keep on the right path. Someone in my local auction house has been flooding it with Chinese fakes lately, but it's mostly been Qianlong and Yongzheng marked vases. This is the first Xuantong marked piece to come through. The "tong" character is so poorly done, too. Is it a non imperial mark and period bowl? The painting on the bowl looks decently done.
John
Hi John,
Interesting looking bowl you posted.
In my opinion it's not genuine. I don't like the stiffness of the theme. Looks hastily painted.
Perhaps @shinigami may be able to post an opinion?
Mark
Hi John, the bottom doesn’t look Republic but modern. One could say well it’s imperial quality but then the painting isn’t good enough. Because the reign was so short there’s great demand (I’m looking for one too) and therefore many fakes.
Birgit
Thanks Mark! At this point, I'm still having trouble seeing what stiff paintings or designs look like, but now that you mention it, I do see what you mean. Appreciate your insight!
Thank you Birgit! I'll stay away from this bowl. This was the first marked piece that came through this auction house that almost fooled me.
@bartholin Yeah, that whole "stiff" business took my awhile to wrap my brain around, but I finally started getting it after looking at lots of examples of authentic pieces, although I still don't always pick up on it myself. But after awhile it just starts to click and you can see it. Of course, some of the best modern fakers will understand this concept as well, so there's that too. I suppose the odds of them getting the potting, glaze, enamel, and quality of artwork all perfectly replicated is pretty rare, so if we study up on all those elements then we're probably in pretty good shape to notice the deceptions.
That bowl is absolutely beautiful, Mark. I guess I assumed that given his short reign, there weren't any high-quality pieces made. It's a stark contrast to the bowl I posted. I haven't really looked into imperial Chinese wares, as it's not my initial interest, but it would be really cool to own one. I got a bit hopeful. It looks everything has to match up to be authentic. I ignored how modern the bottom of the bowl looked and hoped it was a non-imperial M&P bowl.
I think it's the same with the underglaze blue differences I brought up before. The "stiff" painting and those elements can't be learned from reading a book, and come with experience and handling pieces. It'll click one day! Maybe I'll go to the auction preview and handle this particular bowl. I think I'm getting the hang of quality differences now, though!
John
Also, thank you all for your comments. Asian art is fun - you can ask yourself: "What do I want to learn about today?" and you'll always have a different specialty area you haven't looked into prior.
Is this in the upcoming Weschler's sale? I have found that a lot of fakes are flooding the area recently, and have had to be very careful on Quinn's and Sloan's and Weschler's, I think there is an "Importer" in Rockville and Mclean that has been dumping ton's of items into local sales for a while now.
-Jeremy
Hi, Jeremy. Yes, it is! The 18-inch Japanese pure water company charger I lost out on a week ago was also from here. It's a small world, indeed. I agree, it seems like every week there's a couple of reign-marked fakes that pass through Weschler's and Quinn's. I haven't taken a look at Sloan's yet though. That importer seems to be doing very well for themselves though. They always sell for hundreds. They do get a couple of good things every now and then though.
John
Funny thing is, I tried consigning my 16-inch tall jadeite Guanyin carving with them, but they said it probably wouldn't even get $800 and that I was too optimistic. Weird that they take in those but not the carving.
John,
I am local to the area, and have dealt with most of the auction houses here in one way or another, and there are still many good finds to be had. I have hesitated to post about this "importer" on here because most of the issues I have had with them is on the selling end, and sketchy business practices like shill bidding and buying unsold lots for themselves. They have however sold many real things, such as handling my friend's parents estate (At my recommendation because I didn't know enough to not recommend them, and there isn't a day that goes by that I wish I had done my due diligence... I feel rather horrible about his experience, and I suspect it hurt our friendship...) , thought they filled up the remaining empty lots with fakes and overall brought down the prices by scaring away competent bidders with those fakes. they are based out of Rockville, I think, but have multiple locations that seem to pop up and then close randomly, however the main business is China Luban from what I can tell. As far as doing well, their warehouse sells thousands of Chinese "Antiques" a year and I am sure they have made a mint.
I don't mean to hijack your thread by any means, just figured that since you are local it might be informative.
-Jeremy
I should add that Luban antiques is literally one block down Gude drive from Weschler's so I find it to be too much of a coincidence that the items that they both sell are the same types of things. As far as not taking your carving, I have found that they are sometimes finicky with their estimates. And I typically tell friends and clients in the area, that there are no good auction houses that I would trust consigning with, but perhaps, I just expect too much of local Auction Houses.
-Jeremy
