Hey everyone. This is an interesting object with a celadon and russet color. The stone looks hand carved to me but jade is still a mystery to me so I'm not sure if it is jade and hand carved and if so how old it might be. Also, it is part of a larger work but can anyone tell me what it is based on this piece? It has cut ins and holes on the top and bottom. It is 7 inches in length. Looking forward to hearing people's thoughts. Thanks! John
Is it a whistle or a type of recorder instument? Pretty color.
This looks like nephrite jade but one would need to perform a SG to confirm.
As to what it is I am not sure. I think it's a amulet of sorts.
Does this have any distinct smell? I ask you because the colour looks odd and may be treated to look old. BUt that maybe simply the camera.
I remember that Hugh had something similar a number of years ago.

@imperialfinegems Hey Mark, when you say smell, can you describe what type? Here is a picture of the whole thing.
Those russet features look artificial. Too blotchy and thick. Difficult to explain on a forum.
You should be able to smell chemicals if it's been acid treated or bleached.
I have seen a number of these archaic looking pieces and they were all faked serpentine.

@imperialfinegems Would they smell fragrant or toxic? It does have a kind of mild fragrant smell that I recognize, but I sometimes smell that scent on non jade things too, so that might just be from being in someone's house with a common air freshener, I'm not sure. Either way, do they look hand carved to you?
Both nephrite and jadeite jade should have no smell at all my friend unless it's been worn on the body.
There is no distinct smell as it could be fragrant or toxic but more likely toxic due to possible acids. There are numerous techniques.
On the face of it, it looks hand carved.
Raised carvings like yours can be done by two methods. Hand carved or by acid etching.

Google Lens is in favor of calling it a book, a roll up scroll, which explains it being threaded together.
@imperialfinegems They have a mild scent that I might describe as as soapy-spice, although since I brought it home i think it has dissipated somewhat. I will wash them to see if it is something only on the surface and then goes away.
Can you please perform a SG on one of these please as the more I look at them... The more I am not convinced that they are actually nephrite.
When they are layed out the blotchy russet features looks very artificial to me.
