Hi all,
I have a curiosity I'm not familiar with. I found this today during a job run I had up north. Anyone know more about this piece?
It's curious since the design is heavily washed away but the scaring is still there allowing for a surface repaint in gold to happen again. There's a small hole on the side of the one vase, prolly fell or something at some point. I can't really make out how old this is either but it has a cut mark along the foot rim. I may have it restored if it is older than 20th century.
Need to see better pictures but these could be Kangxi Period vases
@lotusblack More pics attached.
The design scar is really intricately made all around the vase. It's also uneven at the foot, has a nicely lighter than expected weight about it too, weighing in at 1445 grams (3.3lbs), when it's typically at least 5lbs+ for more recent pieces like this size. The wear appears to be pretty consistent for a 18th/17th century piece.
I can attach more but 12 is already a lot for one post. The scar is really tough to see without light so this is the best I can do currently. If you do need more, feel free to ask.
I took another look at the foot identification forum page as well, and the 18th century Langyao foot is really spot on to this vase's foot.
How exciting on your input too! I'll have to get in touch with a few conservators for the repair next after I submit it over to Peter next for review.
Let us know what Peter says. Period black glazed Kangxi objects are rare. Most were reglazed later.
To me the footrim has the brownish "compressed sand" look of the late 19th century. Also the glaze doesn't stop properly at the bottom like it used to during Kangxi. What a pity someone broke an ugly hole in it for making a lamp. Please let us know Peter's opinion.
Birgit
The vase is rather large for typical Kangxi period mirror black. The rim of the vase has also been ground down flat to fit the lamp base.
A good test to determine Kangxi from Kangxi revival is black glaze Kangxi porcelain will have a brown slip and glaze so if you see the brown slip it’s a good sign. Here is a photo to show what I am referring to.
@lotusblack thanks for the insight, the photo got lost it looks like
Hi Preston -
I would concur with Birgit @shinigami William @william and Julia @julia ...
The shape, proportions and the 'ghost - images' left from the overall decoration would indicate late 19th century, probably Kangxi revival, IMO ...
As with others, please let us know Peters views on this once received ...
Stuart
Hey all,
Appreciate the comments and inputs. Learning a lot with this and hoping to compare some examples in between Peter's review next. I should have something back cross the next week or two to update on this topic.
When I settle in tonight from my job rums I'll comment some more. Very appreciative of everyone's input!
I would be interested in seeing this repaired with a gold leaf pen. It’s really hard to date monochrome keep us informed either way it’s still a steal.
