I was happy to find this plate on Ebay UK for the price of an ordinary Rose medallion plate. The seller had overlooked the inscription. It belonged to a 1865 service made for the Shah of Persia. Never stop looking, there are still possibilities out there. May you find them in 2022!
Birgit
Birgit, I love it! What a remarkable find.
Yes, your homework paid off, what an interesting history. Congratulations, all the best for the New Year! Sharon
Fascinating! Do you think the "Arabic" inscriptions were added in the destination country? In all these examples, including the Sotheby's bowl, it looks as though a blank cartouche had been incorporated into the design, to be filled in subsequently, like the space for a monogram on a piece of silver. In the case of Jeremy's plate (although it's hard to tell from the photos) the inscription reminds me of the owner's marks that are sometimes seen pierced into pieces of porcelain.
Regards,
John
Sorry I lost track of this thread. It never occurred to me that the writing was probably added later and not in China. You may be right, the black is a different shade from the black in the rest of the decoration. The inscription doesn’t look awkward but written by a practiced hand. Thank you for telling me, I had never noticed it.
Birgit
Birgit, now you need a translation.
I am sorry for not doing this earlier - I thought I saw this service in China to Order and just assumed y'all had seen it with the eBook Jeremy posted. The inscription and lions are illustrated on a similar saucer-dish in China for the West, Vol. 2, p. 495. A small excerpt:
"Painted in the centre with the inscription in Persian 'The King, son of the King, the Monarch, son of the Monarch, Nasir'ud Din Shah, Qajar' below a triple crown with two lion supporters, before the rays of the sun. "
I think Howard mistranslates here since he is referring to Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. The plate illustrated is different, however, with an earlier border, suggesting there was more than one service made for him with this inscription.
This one might be a better translation:
"Inscriptions: al-sultan bin al-sultan bin al-khaqan bin al-khaqan nasir al-din shah qajar, 'The Sultan son of the Sultan son of the Ruler son of the Ruler, Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar'."

Also, the inscription shows some very minor character differences if you pull them up closely side-by-side. I wonder if this betrays a Chinese hand, even if they look quite skillful. Although, it seems minor compared to some of the Latin inscriptions I've seen.
The things learned on this forum sometimes just amaze me. You can’t make this stuff up. How many other hobbies out there where someone possess things from Emperors. Kings, and Royalty. How man cultures are in Birgits plate. Quite a few. A nice historical find.
Wow. That's beautiful! Having a royal connection makes the plate even more exciting.
I once had the pleasure of visiting the SF Asian Art Museum with a friend who is related to a 19th c. Persian king; her family had donated items for its collection and she wanted to check them out so we went todgether & they they were, on display. It was an unforgettable experience as you can imagine. I took a class in beginning Arabic in high school but we didn't get to Persian script.
I just watched this documentary on the interconnectness of trade on the silk route and it’s history between the start of the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire to the end of the Han and the demise of the Roman Empire. Both empires collapsed about the same time. Also discuses the role of the Middle East in this connectiveness.
The programs focus is on silks but it’s the history of the silk routes that I found most interesting. At about the 55 minutes it starts to discuss the maritime silk route that is part of this thread.
i thought many of you might be interested as well.
