Instead here you see the filed border and foot of a flambé glazed snuff bottle, which means that this bottle too, despite its small size (less than four inches), has sticked on the bottom because of glaze’s excessive flooding. Imagine how much glaze went to the bottom on your big vase!!!
You see there that the smooth skin of the glaze is cleanly cut. It doesn’t extend until the border. And you see the matte thickness of the glaze, including its bubbles. And no step between glaze and paste, just because they have been filed together.
While the last picture is showing the natural ending of a black glazed snuff bottle. The picture is not very sharp, but still you can see that the surface (the skin) of the glaze extend, as it should always be normal, to the very border. You can also see that it is irregular, not so neatly cut, and you can see that it is progressively thinning and there is a step between the glaze and the paste of the foot, due to glaze thickness.
And here everything is even more evident. The filed glaze and foot of a small Langyao vase, where we distinctly see the glaze surface, the clean cut due to filing, the glaze matte thickness, including bubbles, and the filed paste.
The last three pictures are showing the natural ending of a red glazed small water pot. You see the natural thinning of the glaze until its very border, and, important, the semi-bright, lightly brownish, surface of the foot near it, which means that it has not been filed. That “skin” of the exposed paste is lacking on your vase.
Please check now your vase and tell us the type of glaze border.
Regards,
Giovanni
Thank you for taking all the trouble Giovanni, I found these examples very helpful and will save them for later use. I haven’t ventured into monochrome yet. Now I know what to look at, among other age signs of course.
Birgit
Same here. I know you don't like to give too many details on open forums, Giovanni, but this has really helped me understand something I was unsure of. I am sure we all appreciate you taking the time to explain this so clearly.
Thank you. 😊
Thank you very much for doing the work and sending me some the photos. I think perhaps Peter might be wrong, I'd have to ask him why he said what he said, but it does look like the vase it ground from the reasons you put forward. I'm not saying the vase is 18th century, but it does seem that the other flambe vases sold at the major auction houses have the same ground foot. I'm not saying 1 or 2 of them, but literally all of them. I have posted pictures of 4 or 5 of them in this thread, but if yuo look online you'll see all the 18th century flambe vases are finished in the same way. This doesn't make mine 18th century. As yuo say the Glaze is over the top and showy, and I can see this, but at the same time the flambe glazes varied a lot through the 18th century. In any case, I am glad it's not a new copy and an original vase with some age. I like it very much, so thanks for everyones comments. Here are a few links to different glaze styles supposedly 18th century. There's quite a variety..

Dear Thomas,
Of the five vases that you have linked, I think that the first one, sold by Bonhams, should have a filed foot. Although it is not visible, I think so for the type of vase. All the other five vases are not filed, it is clearly seen by enlarging the pictures. Those are 18th century and it is reflected in the high prices reached.
Giovanni
Thank you dear Birgit, Julia and Mark.
BTW, I am not sure if Thomas understood what has been shown him, considering that he did post five vases, saying that they was the same as his one, while actually the glaze is clearly not filed, as shown by the round edge.
Regards,
Giovanni
@clayandbrush I can see the subtle difference now, thank you Giovanni , for all your help.
What are your thoughts about this vase?
looking forward to hear from you,
Kind regards,

Hi SC SC - and welcome to this wonderful forum ...
Rather difficult to make any comment on one, slightly blurred, image posted ...
If possible, could you post more clear images, including the interior, mouthrim, complete base and closeups of glaze surfaces and outer/inner footrim edges ...
Stuart
