Am having trouble finding anything similar to this bowl. I feel like I’ve seen the decoration on the exterior before. The interior is also unusual. Does the incised-cobalt style have a name? Thanks for any help.

Thanks Brian!
I forgot to mention its 9.75 inches across.

@lotusblack I second that, I especially like the swag pattern around the exterior of the rim. I tried to find something similar but I struck out. I hope Julia, Michael, JRN or other knowledgeable members may recall seeing, because I would be interested in learning. Sharon
May I ask if it is porcelain or earthenware? The outside reminds me of the rather festive looking swags one sees as 18th c Chinese plate borders.
Can you take a photo of the whole central decoration, please? I would like to see the whole pattern. If you have time, of course. 😊
Hi Julia,
Thanks so much. This one is an Ebay purchase. I spent the last few days trying to identify it and came up empty...but bought it anyway. I think its porcelain, but that’s only from seeing the same pics you are seeing. If you’re not sure, I’m not sure. Do you think it might be Chinese? It is Chinese style, sometsuke, but I figured it was Japanese. Have a few more pics, only one more of the interior...

If noone can identify it you should have Peter look at it and let us know what he says. It seems to have some legitimate age and it looks very unique. I like it a lot. Very nice the way the blue pools around the scalloped edge.
I am at a loss on this. It is very interesting. I feel there is something very familiar about it but I can't even be sure where it was made or from what. I think the blue and the way it pools as John mentioned, makes it seem Japanese, but whether it is or not I am not sure.
I think we need you to hold it and take your own photos. Then if we are still no further, do as John says and ask Peter. 😊
I have been staring at this and I just can't see that base as Japanese.
The finish of the glaze on the outside doesn't look right either. It almost has an old matt Dutch tin-glazed look, without the fritting, which makes me think there is something of a Ming look to it and to the shape of the rim.
The blue is also quite like it in tone but the decoration around the outside strike me as being kind of foreign. Could it be 17th/ 18th c European Chinoiserie? Looking at the figure of the girl makes me wonder about that, too.
Just more thoughts - you can tell I am fascinated!
I wonder if @clayandbrush or @greeno107 might shed some light on this. 🤔
Thanks John, Peter is definitely an option.
Hi Mark, thanks. I do think its odd that I have never seen one like this, if it is Japanese.
Hi Julia, Thanks so much for the information. I am happy that you and others feel its interesting, as I do. Something about both the pattern on the outside and the blue on the inside is familiar to me also. I almost feel like I’ve seen something related on one of Peter’s videos. But there are too many of those to scour...I know nothing about Dutch or European, but I will take a look at those terms you supplied. Maybe I should have mentioned the seller is Japanese. But that only holds minor weight I suppose. I am having it sent on a slow boat, saving $20, a bit regretful, given the interest. It will be a month and a half before I get it. Will keep looking around online in the meantime 🙂

I did figure out that the decoration technique is called “anhua”, although that refers only to the incising, not necessarily the cobalt blue color.

Julia 🤣
I suppose this is the type it is partially emulating. The glaze is not very far off. To be clear, I’m not saying they are comparable....I am not that daft 😋
