Dear forum members.
I've been eyeing this set for a while, tried to research about the mark but to no avail. Now I eventually got it and hope to identify the floral mark on it. looks to be late Meiji, with respectable care put into painting decoration. Please share you thoughts on it. it's a matching set of 4 10 cm wide.
Thank you.
Hi Spartakos,
They look quite nice. I think they may be older than late Meiji. I’ve seen that flower before and it was on something impressive, but I can’t remember exactly what. Its not on something I own. Something I saw in an auction catalog perhaps. I’ll try to remember or perhaps another member has a better idea.

Hello Todd
Thank you for your reply. You give me hope, the ornament in the middle of bowl was common in edo period. Will also try posting on other forums, hope will identify it.
Best regards
Spartakos
Hi Spartakos,
Now that I look again I’m a bit worried about my assessment. I really have a hard time telling age from pictures. I’m relatively inexperienced. Am not very sure they are old. Is the foot correct? Seems off to me. The shade of green looks harsh too. I don’t know... Maybe a more experienced member will chime in.

I really don’t understand why I look one day and it looks old, then I look today, and it doesn’t. I didn’t think I was bipolar ?
Sorry about the that.

Dear Todd
That's not a problem, you are much better expert than i am for sure. Hope someone else will contribute.
Best regards
Spartakos
It is hard to tell from the pictures as the colours look different in each photo. Late Meiji might be ok, especially if you think so as you are the one who can see them properly. Is it possible to take some pictures outside? That might help.
Dear Julia,
Thank you for joining. I have attached a daylight closeup photos for better detail and color representation. My estimations are usually very inaccurate. The glaze is imperfect and porous, the shade of blue is consistent to other Edo-Meiji period pottery I own. The Item is however a unused and i can't estimate age from the wear on it, the only thing is the gold rim paint have faded away. If it is a genuine antique then it's probably never been used. Others have pointed similar marks were used in early Edo period.
Best regards
Spartakos
Thank you, those are better. I can see why Todd, keeps fluctuating between old and not so old. Is there any chance that the flower on the reverse and the red/gold parts could be decals or printed in some way?
The reason I ask is that in the picture below, where the red/gold part of the decoration meets the rim on the left hand sides, there is a similar edge to the pattern as though it has missed a bit. The same can be seen in the red bits in the centre. This could easily be wear, it is just hard to tell from the pictures. After all, it would be strange that all the gold has gone from the rim (unless it has been kept upside down) but no wear to the rest.
Dear Julia
Thank you for joining. I would rule out printed decoration as it is slightly different on every bowl and the brushwork is visible. The wear of golden rim have puzzled me as well. But as you suggested I also think it was one of the contact points while it was stored. A user from another forum suggested a late Edo period, but the mark still have not been identified. The supplier mentioned bowls were wrapped in cloth with some marking on it but he threw it away due to it's condition, a pity. I often see wooden signed boxes being discarded by unsuspecting traders. Hope the mark will come up, will keep an eye on it.
Best regards
Spartakos
Thanks for your kindness Julia ?
With these new pictures, they look better to me as Edo. The more translucent shade of green looks much more like what you would expect. The lack of wear is a bit curious as pointed out, but is not an unheard of thing. Another possibility regarding the gold is that it was just poorly applied to begin with. But I have no knowledge of potting or if this is likely or not, just speculating.
Best, Todd

Thank you, Todd, but I also wondered if maybe they were 1940s from the first pics. ?
I think they could well be roughly mid 19th century Kinrande imari? I tried to find something with similar colours and came across this, described as late Edo. There are differences but the green and red seem a pretty good match.
The only other item I have seen with a flower on the base was described as late 19th c but the colours were different and the flower not as well done.
Julia
Dear Julia
This is indeed a very close resemblance, colors match, and stylistically very similar brushwork. Also the wear of the gold on the rim is identical. An excellent suggestion.
Thank you
Spartakos
