Gold on black enamel, rooster hen and chicks. I have read this sometimes relates to family and good fortune. Is it part of wedding garb? Metal slot on back seems to suggest it attaches to something. Any ideas.
i googled that and it appears you are right on. I have a good starting point now. Many thanks!

Now that i know it is a Fuchi-kashira set can anyone recommend how to find specifics about the set? Is the metal revealed in any way? What era, school, heraldry? Any recommended sites? Thx!
To me they look probably late edo to meiji period. I am not sure they are family specific. To me they seem more symbolically general in design. The quality seems good and if that rooster is made of gold then that's probably a very good thing. John
Definitely gold. It has set for 40 yrs without being cleaned at all and no tarnish. I will look at those periods for info. Thanks again!
The web shows so many available, and probably impossible to pin down specific information or history from pictures. Fittings must be able to detach and reattach for there to be so many loose from their swords?
@scott123 Yes they can be taken off and reused. There were literally millions of Japanese swords made throughout history so there are many examples and types of sword fittings.
FYI: The more i dig the more i’m impressed by this little piece of artwork. Apparently, more can be discerned by examining the nanako of the fuchi. The thousand(s) of tiny hand punched nipples upon which the relief art work can be attached. It’s incredible to see the precise handwork under magnification. It’s said that blindness was usual by age 30 for this master’s labor.
An excerpt from The Notebooks of Rear Admiral Edwin T. Layton, U.S. Navy: There are several types and classifications of nanako, some exceptionally minutely executed, while others show mixed effects:Tatsuta Nanako: Applied in horizontal rows, this style is prevalent in Goto work. There are three discernable types developed over the years. Type A is that of the early Goto and is seldom encountered The nipple grain is small and closely set with attention to the vertical alignment which is slightly slanted. Type B is the form used by the mid-Edo Goto and many other contemporary schools. The grain is a little larger and the angle is diagonal to the edge to which the horizontal grains run parallel. Type C, in vogue during the closing years of the Bakufu, has the grain smaller and relatively low with evidence of excellent hammer control, resulting in a a very even and fine nipple line. The alignment is horizontal with reference to the edge and the vertical alignment varies somewhat. …
This pic may illustrate some more, from left to right: Goto Mitsunari, Omori Hidekazu, araki Tomei.
Mine appears more the diagonal style seen in second panel:

@scott123 The better of the Japanese metal workers were extraordinary. Indeed what you have are little treasures. Perhaps someday they will be mounted again to a worthy sword. If that ever happens please share pictures with us. John
