Hello all,

I would like to ask your opinion about this Japanese vase. Measurements: 30cm tall x 26cm in diameter. I'm learning about Japanese porcelain styles and sometimes I get a little confused with so many styles and enamels. How should I classify this vase? All comments on age and quality will be welcome!

All the Best,
MB

MB,

I think your vase is confusing. It looks like Kutani origin, but done in the style of Satsuma, on earthenware with a crackle in the glaze. Would love to see what others more experienced have to say.

I think what you have is a Daishoji Kutani vase, I am uncertain of the marks.

Nice vase. Great pictures btw.

Unfortunately I know little about kutani ware. Perhaps if @JRN or others log he/they may be able to enlighten us all.

Yes, I wish we could gage our Japanese ceramics posts based on being able to foresee JRN's schedule. I think it is a close match to that style of mark that Jeremy has found. It is a beautiful vase you have found. Those phoenix rondelles are especially pretty. Sharon

Dear all,

Thank you very much!
John, I also thought of it! But I always have a hard time defining Japanese styles. Also, thank you very much Jeremy! Your link definitely put me on the right track. And thanks Mark and Sharon for the always generous comments, let's wait for JRN!
All the best, MB

I think your gorgeous vase is an example of either Hanazume or Shoza Kutani.

A lovely piece but I am not sure I would see it as imari style. I think Paula may be on the right lines.

Hi @mb1991,

Your vase has been on my mind quite a bit lately. I want to add that I have my doubts about whether it is Daishoji Imari. I'm still a novice in that area, but I've been trying to learn more about it because of my interest in the "black ships" design. Apparently, all Daishoji Imari exhibit a beveled foot rim, and this one is flat. Also, I paged through my reference book on Daishoji Imari and it doesn't show this shape , or decorative elements either.

On another forum, there is a healthy ongoing debate as to the actual existence of Daishoji Imari, or whether it is simply a marketing ploy. For these reasons, I agree more with Julia and Paula that it is of general Kutani origin. The mark on your vase to me looks like a stylized "Fuku" mark, but I haven't been able to find a similar example.

MB, is your vase earthenware? I'm going to reiterate that it looks satsuma in style. Kutani origin, satsuma style, and it even appear to be an interpretation of the "Millefleur" pattern.

John

Dear all,
Thank you very much Paula, Sharon and John for the additional comments!
The link that Jeremy sent mentions this question about the actual existence of "Daishoji Kutani", anyway, a great read! I will delve into Kutani ware, starting with Hanazume and Shoza following Paula's advice. John, thank you so much for searching your reference books! I really appreciate your research on black ships theme. I totally agree with Satsuma style and Kutani origin, very interesting the comparison with the millefleur patter from Qing porcelain, makes a lot of sense. Two themes that I really like!
All the best, MB

Hey MB,

Style/enamel:
I believe Paula’s statement of enameled in (or similar to) the Shōza style rings true.

On the body/type:
Many Kutani pieces had a semi-earthen type body comprising of visible craquelure.
As John notably mentions: the green square on base is indeed a traditionally based “Fuku” mark.

If of assistance, some further notes:
From my subjective research & experiences: I find as the early 20th century went forward into the mid-century that there was quite some exaggeration of this crackle-like effect on the bodies, as there also was on “Satsuma” style exports.

(Sometimes you’ll note the bodies are near identical, with the enameling being the only distinguishing factor between the two - often featuring traditional Kutani markings or a generic “Satsuma-yaki” for the later).

Date?
Early-to-mid 20th century in my (personal) opinion..

Nicely enameled & gilt looks to be in very fine condition!

Hope this helped
-JRN

Hello JRN
Thank you very much for taking a look at the vase and for your very interesting comments. It helped a lot! Also, thanks for the help in determining the age. Very good to know about this issue involving the crackling effect.
All the Best,
MB
