I think I came across a very lucky find yesterday at an estate sale. They were folded up in a messy pile on a table. I saw a corner with some of the clouds and immediately knew it could be something nice. It appears the dealers running the sale thought they were table napkins or something of that sort. At any rate, they appear to be old Rank Badges, which I have never owned before so I am trying to educate myself. From what I can see they would be considered civil rather than military. But I do not know which specific rank they would be. I'm hoping you all can tell me or guide me to an online educational resource. Also, I want to date them. I have seen some others online with similar borders that were dated to the 18th C. They have some wear, one more so than the other. Any information you can give me is greatly appreciated. I'm excited to have found them and have been enjoying looking at them. Believe it or not they only asked me to pay $5 for them! it was a very good day for picking! John
These are a fantastic find! They are civil rank , and which bird can be determined by the two circles on the longest tail feathers ; I think , paradise flycatcher whiich are the lowest rank but also the rarest civil badges, because owners got rid of them when they got promoted. not sure whether these are C19th or earlier , but the badges like these with the simpler design are usually from about the 1890s when they was an imperial ruling prevented elaborate badges.
What is really good about these is they are kesi split weave (rather than embroidered) - kesi rank badges are the most desirable and collectable.

@tam18 Good news indeed! That's a fascinating thing that the most basic rank ends up being the most rare. The meek shall inherit the earth, so they say. I'd love to know how you can tell the difference between kesi split weave and embroidered. I'll have to do some studying on that. Any pointers and specific info you have are welcomed.
I think what Tam means is that the designs are woven into the fabric like a tapestry rather than stitched on.
How many are there and do they have different designs?
I really enjoy hearing about great second hand finds! I liken antique shopping to fishing; it takes a lot of patience but then something special happens and you land a big one!

Kesi pieces are made from coloured silk threads woven on a loom (by hand at this time in the qing dynasty, ) so the end product is flat . There are other types of weaving used by the Chinese but if you hold a kesi piece up to the light you can see gaps or splits where the colours or pattern changed. Hand weaving was and is a highly skillled craft, and it seems kesi pieces were much rarer than hand embroidered silk.
Embroidered pieces typically have lots of different kinds of stitches on one piece of plain silk (or sometimes the silk ground is woven patterned damask etc) and the embroidered stitches are raised from the surface, even the most common stitch - satin stitch which gives the appearance of being flat - the stitches are separate from the silk ground.
I guess people could embroider in any environment , including at home, whereas hand looms (which can be huge) to make kesi tapestries needed a bigger investment and were only used in workshops.

@steve There are two of them with the same design, although there are very slight variations. I agree that the fishing analogy is pretty accurate. I have started my collecting career over this past year by going to a number of estate sales and digging through the heaps. I've grown to enjoy the hunt. It's rather addictive.
