Good afternoon, I have just purchased 2 famille Vases, this one famille ribbed vase, appears right enamel, 53cm, any comments are welcome.
Q. are ribbed famille vases common? Q. What would the market value be?
The second vase a 'worrier scene' also appears to be in the right enamel, is this correct?
Based on these images these two vases are new copies.
I hope you did not pay much for them.
Mark
@imperialfinegem, Hi Mark, if they wernt copies, what would they be like? How expensive would they be?
Pictures blur when enlarged so I can't go into details. But that's unnecessary anyway. The garish colors and the low painting quality clearly show a recent production. No matter what you paid for them: stop buying and get some information first.
Read books, go to museums, visit websites like Bidamount and the links on it to get a notion of what good pieces should look like. You can also ask here if you intend to buy something.
Birgit
I checked the auction website and although one of these items is clearly misdescribed the terms and conditions will not permit refunds in these cases, which is quite usual.
Whether you are a collector or were hoping to sell these items on, please follow Birgit's advice.
The first vase if it was genuine would have been worth around $1000 at auction.
The second one has a imperial (Tongzhi mark 1862-1874) script indicating imperial ware and thus would be very expensive at over 100k.
Outside of the major auction rooms like Sotheby's, Christies and Bonham's one needs to be very very careful as the second tier and lower auction houses are flooded with fakes. These fakes have very little value at all and should be avoided at all times.
Mark
Thank you all quite alot for your appraisal, anyone else want to add anything? Anything at all, would be appreciated
Hello,
I agree with the advice already given. I find it fun to search the Christie's site as they usually provide excellent photos (sometimes even of foot rims) and the hammer price (although you have to understand that those prices are often top of the market, usually due to provenance). You can train your eye as the more you look at the good stuff you'll be able to recognize those of newer and lesser quality. Then you'll get to the point where you can let your appreciation of an item help guide you. If you think something's worthy but it doesn't really appeal to you, put it down.
Never let your enthusiasm blind you to red flags. Always look for that one aspect that isn't "right" and scrutinize scrutinize scrutinize.
I've made a few mistakes in my time but learned from them and "chalked it up to tuition". It's how I learned to distinguish transfer from hand-decorated porcelain, for example.
Good luck!
Regards,
Steve
Thanks to all reviews, will post some high resolution photos tomorrow, & please take second look!
Good afternoon, here are some close up high resolution photos,
Q. Are ribbed or lobed famille vases rare? Its very heavy, like my other famille vases
Dear Harr,
Here is a top-of-the line example of a Chinese famille verte mallet vase from the Kangxi era at Christies. I'll look around for a late Qing example, too, which would be the next best.
Note the color, use of line and form create clear compositions, shape of vase, etc.
Regards,
Steve

@nicespec Ribbed porcelains aren't terribly rare, although I'd say they were usually used on higher-end items.
@nicespec Here are some examples I could find of 19th century famille verte Chinese items. The first comes from Freeman's in Chicago, the other from an auction house that Peter hasn't rated but they look 19th c. to me. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong).
Note the quality of line and color, and the forms: generally a little more stiff and less vibrant than their Kangxi prototypes. The foot rims are rounded on vases and the paste a little rough/sandy with an oatmeal color. The foot rim of your warrior vase has been dirtied/stained and has a gentle slope near the edge.
Thank you for the additional pic's of the ribbed vase.
I think from memory it had a imperial Tongzhi mark. If this was genuine it would be worth a lot of money.
Unfortunately it's a rather crude copy from the later 20th Century.
The design is stiffly painted. The yellow is totally wrong for the period. The dragon handles are crudely depicted. The overall look is messy jumbled.
Most importantly is if you look closely at the figures.... They all look like clones. This is a dead give way!
The other vase you posted is also a newish copy.
