These are quite small. I think they may be sauce or dipping bowls. Any information gratefully received.
Paula, they are Japanese, Peter has said in videos that any time you see blue circle next to the interior rim, it is going to usually be a Japanese piece, large over 90% of the time, of course that means there could be outliers and one wonders would the outliers of China be 10% or less and what a nightmare if unmarked, but your piece has a mark that looks to be Japanese to me too. Thanks. They look Japanese to me as well. But did not want to commit to that opinion just on my own say-so. I think those are supposed to be deer so here comes another question. Is it just me or do the heads look like rodent heads? (Disregard the antlers)
Deer don't have whiskers, so this looks odd. Maybe they are some type of mythical creature, like a northern Chinese backwoods moose rat.Â
Not the dreaded Chinese backwoods moose rat! Why I hear tell they are even more dangerous than R.O.U.S.

I love these! The deer look so cute. They look Japanese to me too, with that great use of negative space, as Peter likes to say.
My best guess for the mark on the back is 亢王 or 王亢. That sounds like a family name.
On the front looks like 北山圖, which would be "Drawing (from) North Mountain". That's probably a specific place name, maybe Kitayama?
But there's a catch. The 北 and 山 are written together as if one character. This might just be the style (emulating seal script) or it could have its own meaning. I hope someone who knows more Japanese can help!
Here is another pair of mine. They too have a mystery mark and I don't know what creature that is.
