This is one of two vases I bought… they are a pair where the village scene theme is shared, but not a mirror of each other.
I could only manage to carry the one vase from my car to my hotel room.
They are really big, just over 22” tall and quite wide. Purchased from the mansion formally owned by William Frederic Hearst, I have little doubt they were originally Hearst’s.
The rendering is Nihonga style, but the borders and mark suggest kutani made.
I’d guess 1900-1912… the very tail end of Meiji. I’m sure the mark will help clarify the dating.
Does anyone know this mark?
Thanks!
How is he related to William Randolph Hearst of San Simeon fame and Hearst publishing? That sleeping baby is charming.
@sharonp Wait until I show you the other vase… really mind blowing.
The sale was at The Beverly House, Hearst’s Beverly Hills 40,000 sqft estate, and according to the current owner, was part of the estate when he purchased it in 1975 Hearst Jr.
That’s pretty solid provenance unless the current owner is lying, but given the circumstances, I’m confident it’s legit.
I actually have a friend going there for me tomorrow to go check out a French and a Florentine painting I have a few thoughts about. Must have been fabulous. Were those green vases anything special? also there was an interesting looking carved "Chinese?" table in one of the photos, which were lacking detail, what did you make of it?
If this is the William Randolph Hearst mansion in Beverly hills, I should add...
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 After your friend checks them out, if you’d like to email me a photo of the paintings, the property owner and I are on very good terms (just came from his home after a private sale discussion). I might be able to help broker a better deal (no charge) than through the estate seller.
@imperialfinegems Thanks Mark!
That makes good sense to be Nippon. I’ve never seen anything like it of this size.
Of course, when you had hundreds of millions of dollars like the previous owner, there’s just about nothing that you can’t buy.
And now, I have them! Yippie!
@jbeer2121 BTW I bought both tables plus one not in the photos… a very rare and large drum shaped huanghuali table.
Fantastic piece except it has a rather large burn mark on the top from what looks like a hot pot was place on it.
Wow, I have never seen anything so picture perfect on a Japansese vase. I really want to examine vase 🙂 I would be fascinated to see the second vase. So exciting 🙂
Ok, I could not find the backmark, Yokohama has similarities.
Some candidates Based on similarity of Backmark, other backmarks that seemed similar were Royzan and Royzanuku and Seiko. Then again the character layout is similar to Seto backmarks.
A possible candidate based on style of painting.

That is amazing! I can't see the foot but I assume it is porcelain?
I have never seen such realistic depictions of people on vases etc made during Meiji. The villagers seem modern (as in contemporary to the artist ie painting what he/she sees) rather than traditional. The background is more like the usual style seen on other pieces, a sense of continuity which makes the faces very compelling and reminds me of that Chinese vase Birgit bought where the people were depicted realistically for the period. So I am wondering if it could it be a bit later than late Meij?
I wonder if the last three characters say Nikko made? Nikko made satsuma style pieces on porcelain.
While I was looking that up, I came across a lovely down loadable booklet which may be of interest to many so I will post that separately.
I can't do it without it all appearing in the post and there are 101 pages it says! When I find out how to just put a link in, I will try again.
@julia It really is a unique rendering- I was thinking it was kutani… Nippon never crossed my mind until Mark said something, so I was completely fooled as to what is was.
I think I’m correct on the age as late Meiji, but if it’s Taisho (1912-1922), that would only add 10 more years to its age, so certainly possible.
