When I brought this it had a sticker saying China unfortunately due to handling it has fallen off and been lost. I mention this so we know it has no great age. What I have never known is what it is made from. I have thought it might be glass but the are no mold marks and it is very sharp to the touch in places. It is always cool to the touch. I have concluded it is carved but from what ? If it is carved it is quite finely done around it's tail and little beard. It has toes and toe nails that are sharp, it has foot pads that leave footprints in something soft like blu-tack. It changes color in strong light. It reflects light rather than absorbing and then returning the light with a glow like Jade does. In some lights you can see two colors and one half seems cloudy. In the lower parts of it's legs you can see inclusions in the material whatever it is. It was a charity shop find and is 9cm long and about 7cm high. Any thoughts as to what it is made from would be very much appreciated.
Regards
Michael
Glass or Sepentine glass could be scratched easily with a steel knife tip , in a hidden area so not to damage the pieces aesthetics .
This is one the nine sons of dragon, called Piqiu who has only one horn. This jade could be from regions outside Hetian, Xinjiang. The style is modern.
Mark will give you more idea hopefully.

Hello Carlyoung,
Yes I gave it a scratch test and there were no marks. Mind you we don't have very sharp or hard steel knives just run of the mill kitchen knives.
Thank you for taking the time to reply
Michael
Dear Xin
Thank you for that at least I know what to call him. Yes I thought it must be pretty new.
Cheers
Michael
Hi Brettm,
Firstly the pictures you have taken show the said to be on one hand a off-white colour and in the other hand a light greenish celadon appearance.
I do agree with the sentinent that this post is post 1950.
I did not know it was called piqiu. Now we all know. Thank you Xin.
Carlyoung mentions a strong blade which would under normal circumstances leave a mark. Both bowenite and hard serpentine will not leave a mark.
Brettm I really can't tell from the pictures if your item is jade or other. The phone/camera does not do justice to the post. Of concern is the 2nd last picture that gives me the impression of bowenite. Having said that the other pictures do not give me that impression. Confusing I know.
Did you buy as jade or other?
There was a couple of weeks a ago a similar jade to yours on offer via ebay, that bought a good price of @$1200.
Mark
Hello Mark,
First of all I hope you are feeling better. For once my photo's are pretty correct. Although would not say off white would say off green if there is such a thing. However in strong sun light it changes to a slightly darker shade which is a bit strange as most things tend to be lighter in strong light. In some lights you can see a line and one side is lighter than the other and one side is cloudy and dense whilst the other side is translucent and you can see inclusions. It was purchased from a charity shop with no claim other than' green dog from China'. It was under $10.00. Did not think it was jade, but had convinced my self that it was a natural stone and was hoping to discover which sort.
Regards
Michael
Great find!
I like charity finds. The reason I mentioned the other was that a friend of mine was interested and asked me check it out . I did + told them that in all probability it was bowenite gauging the pics and information received from seller. Seller was very evasive. Didn't take kindly to my numerous emails.
I think in all probably your item is Jade. It would be worth getting a opinion/report from a gemologist, especially if you decide to sell in the future.
Mark
Wow thank you Mark will certainly seek expert advice if I decide to part with it. Now I know what to call the little beast thanks to Xin and a bit wiser as to the possible material. Thanks for your tip Carlyoung.
Thanks
Michael
