Not sure what to make of this mug, including whether it is old or not. The inside looks a lot like Chosun Karatsu ware. The outside looks like Raku, mostly going by the color. The glaze is complex, and pretty in the light. The handle is a bit provincial, almost amateurish to my eye. It has a grooved design. I’ll include a vase I have with similar grooves, even deeper. For both pieces, the color of the glaze is different in the valleys as opposed to the ridges, although the effect is more pronounced in the vase. Not sure if this is a style that has a name. Thanks for any insight, Todd

take it with a grain of salt
Hi Todd,
I like both your items. Very Wabi-sabi. They maybe older than you might think. The tankard seems from the photo to be made from a very grainy body, old Seto wares were made from a stone local to the area of the kilns. This stone was not a clay but when ground and mixed with a medium and fired it vitrified to form a type of stoneware. I am far from expert and have not been lucky enough to handle such wares only have seen photo's from museums you should take my opinion with as you say a grain of salt. The fact that it has a handle may help an expert with dating. I like the carved form and glaze on the vase also hope somebody with a real understanding of such wares comes in and gives an opinion rather than my personal uniformed thoughts.
Michael
Hi Michael,
I always appreciate your wisdom, my friend. I picked out these two pieces because I thought they might have some age. But I am really just guessing. A 19th century Imari charger, and other more common types seem a lot easier for me to identify with confidence. Hopefully I’ll improve. The dark, grainy material is promising, I agree. The vase has a mark...should have included a pic.
take it with a grain of salt
Todd,
I recently watched a video not sure if it was one of Peters where the subject of handles on ceramic vessels was discussed the point being that when they started to add handles they followed the design and form of earlier metal vessels might explain the slightly weird way the handle meets the body of the tankard/ mug at the top. I am not trying to say your items are very old, I understand that what they call Old Seto is still made in Japan mostly sold through high end stores and Art galleries for followers of the tea ceremony. Very interesting items will look through my references and see if I can find that mark.
Michael
Michael,
I did not know that about the handles. Very interesting. Now that you mention it, I feel like I have seen metal tankards with a handle like that. I’ll have to look around. Something else to keep my eyes open for...

@watership. And a lovely mark it is indeed. It is a beautiful, artistic glaze, like an abstract painting.
