I am hoping you all can date this for me. I know very little about Imari and I find it to be rather confusing. It has what I think is the artemisia leaf which I know is a Kangxi thing, but I have no idea if this plate dates to that time or if this is a later piece in the style of. I am hoping it is Chinese, but I realize Imari was made in Japan and elsewhere. The foot rim is very white, and it seems that many Kangxi/Yonzheng pieces have the oatmeal colored foot, so I don't know if they can be this white and be from the early Qing time frame as well or if the whiteness means it must be more modern? Regardless,I find the decoration to be rather lovely. It's a small size dish, about 6 inches across. Thanks in advance for your insights! John
Imari is a kind of Japanese porcelain which was copied in China , and later in the west, but I think this is Japanese , possibly dating to the Meiji period , but I'm not very sure. It does not have the look of earlier Imari pieces, from the footrim and the shape/potting. The artemesia leaf could have been a nod to Chinese Imari , or it could just be a common marking on both Japanese and Chinese pieces.

Hi John,
Not an expert on chinese imari. Being able to identify either can be difficult. I submit the following would indicate in my opinion that your post is Chinese rather than Japanese and dates to the 20th century.
1. Chinese imari iron red tends to be thinner and translucent. Japanese on the other hand is more of a darker red.
2. Chinese imari is often highlighted with gilt.
3. Chinese imari cobolt blue tends to be more clear and bright.
4. Often you will find spur marks on japanese porcelain especially if it's prior to about 1910. Chinese rarely has spur marks after mid ming period.
5. Japanese porcelain often has one or two outer rings near the base.

And do you think they look older than the other one because of the coloration of the foot rim?

Yes these two are Japanese. Date wise early 20th century. So late Taisho period 1912-1926 to early Showa period 1926-1989 in my opinion.

I defer to the more learned members above. I haven’t seen that black leaf before. It is nice quality, an homage to Kangxi Imari, but not trying to be a fake. The subsequent pieces you provided are all clearly Japanese, as has already been stated.

I also have not seen that black leaf with gilt. Although I still think it is Chinese rather than Japanese for reasons already outlined in earlier post. But I could be wrong!

I am very unsure. I suppose a company such as Fukagawa might make something similar, omitting the usual blue rings for a more elegant look. But the leaf is not Fukagawa, as far as I know. Could be Chinese, as you say. Sorry, not much help 😋

I think the first plate/dish has a look of Kangxi (the design with the outer border, inner circle nod to blood and milk) but is Japanese. It is too small for there to be spur marks as I am pretty sure this was not made before late Meiji so end 19th c and I believe by then the use/number of spurs was waning?
The reason I think it is Japanese is the style of the branches or twigs that the flowers are on. The flowers are also very Japanese looking in colour and style, I had a large plate covered in similar blossom. It has been sold so I can't show it.
The unuausl part hat throws me on the dating is that leaf underneath, I have a small part of a cabaret set (is that what it is when all the pieces make a larger shape) that I am fairly sure is Japanese (again a look of kangxi), it has similar branches, a leaf underneath but not coloured in.
Although I feel this is late Meiji or maybe a little after, that leaf makes me think it could be up to 1940s.

Please can also ask about an Imari bowl, as just like John I struggle to distinguish the difference in the styles of Imari.
I am purchasing a Victorian Town House and I have been looking for a decent sized, blue and white bowl to use as a fruit bowl in the house. Last week I purchased a bowl on eBay that is 27.5 cm wide and I think that it may have originally been a wash basin. I would be interested to get a reasonable idea of its age, but I haven't been able to find a similar type of foot ring in Peter's video regarding Qing porcelain foot rings and so I was wondering if it is a modern piece. It does have a slight iron mark on the edge of the glaze on the inside of the foot.
