Finally, I hope I bought chinese jar. It is with lid and 8 inch tall, 7 inch in diameter and 9 inch with teapot nose.
The color is sandy yellowish with brown assent. the glaze over the top rim and lid are black. The stamp on the bottom is impressed, divided on 5 with 4 Chinese characters. Difficult to understand.
Could you please tell me if this one is real old Chinese, what does stamp mean (period), possible the value, I hope I didn't overpaid.
Please see web where I post my pictures https://antiquepassion.weebly.com/help-identify.html
Thanks, thanks, can not wait to get an answer. Computer still showing the old image, just click on it to see what I am asking
Hi,
I don't feel confident saying it is Chinese, in fact my first thought was that it looked Japanese. There doesn't seem to be place for a handles so I presume it is for cold liquids?
Is the wire there to hold it together?
I'm sorry, I am not being very helpful. I can't see the mark clearly and I have no idea about value either.
Hope someone can help you better.
Julia
Sorry, I forgot to say that I think it is probably part of a (mid 20th c?) set: there are probably matching mugs, like little sake cups, no handles. That may help you find out more about it - unless of course, I am leading you up the wrong path! 😊
Hi Julia,
thank you for your answer. maybe it is Japanese, I have no idea what kind of pottery this is. I am trying to look on ebay, google. but doesn't come up anything even close look at this one.
No handles, large leaded opening from the top, slim nose.
I uploaded more picture with the nose, cracks and mark. https://antiquepassion.weebly.com/help-identify.html
I'm sorry, it is too hard for me. I hope someone will help you further.
I guess Julia is right, it’s possibly a Japanese sake pot. These come in many different forms. Thought of a tea pot first but without a handle and with hot tea inside it might be a bit awkward.
Birgit
Hi WishList _
I have little knowledge of such wares, but I would concur with Julia and Birgit, this does not look Chinese IMO, and is probably either Japanese or possible South East Asian ...
The mark seems to be placed within what is possible a 'cash' design, but the characters are very difficult to read ...
I also hope someone else can help you with this piece ...
Stuart
Thank you, Birgit
Agree with you for hot tea will not work. it is strange no handle, and the lid has a hole. I have couple sake bottle, they dont have second hole, I can be wrong but if you look at my has very large top opening what is not usual for alcohol.
I sow on google some old Spanish cooling pottery for water, but with handle at the top.
But have Asian mart at the bottom.
If you will come up with some comments very welcome,
Wish list
Hi Stuart,
Thank you for looking at my pot.
What do you mean "The mark seems to be placed within what is possible a 'cash' design"
I was looking for some museum pieces online, didnt find similar, can not figure out for what this jar was used.
I will try to look more maybe like you sad in South East Asian pottery.
Looking forward to hear more ideas,
Thanks to all, lovely people here. Great educational sources and of course fantastic weekly videos.
It is possible the hole in the lid was for a decorative finial?
Hi WishList -
The base ‘cash’ design could resemble the copper coinage that was used as part of the monetary system, usually round with a square middle hole surrounded by the four character mark of the reigning Chinese Emperor when minted. This type of coinage was subsequently copied in Japan and Annam (present-day Vietnam), during the Ming Dynasty.
Or it could be an interpretation of the cash motif, which is one of the ‘Eight Treasures’ - or ‘Eight Precious Things’, a design commonly used on ceramics.
Stuart
Hi WishList -
I would check the coinage/four character Emperor mark first, as the mark seems to resemble/copy this, more closely then the Eight Treasures cash motif, IMO ...
My pleasure - hope this is of some help ...
Stuart
