Hello, everyone. I recently picked up this Famille noire vase. Does anyone have any idea as to age or what the mark says, etc.? The paste is a bit whiter than it looks in the photo. Thanks to everyone on this forum for being helpful.
Hi J-Lewis,
In my opinion your vase is Japanese and has a probable date of being from the taoshi period 1912-1926. It could even be late Meiji 1868-1912. Difficult to determine without knowing the mark or maker.
At first glance I thought it was a mark of koransha (blue scented orchid). However, upon a closer look it is not.
We some fantastic members who I am sure will be able to decipher the mark.
Nice vase.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Thanks, Mark! I appreciate your help. JL
@imperialfinegems Mark, My wife is Japanese and she says that the mark is a "kotobuki" mark, which is the Japanese equivalent of a shou character. Alas, she knows nothing about Japanese porcelain. Take care and thanks again... Jason

Greetings JL,
Everybody who commented (imo) provided you with some great starting points that I also concur with.
@Julia summed it up perfectly: this is a classic Yamatoku design when looking at the relief and colouration of the floral fixtures; also the base and rim borders further add to that theory with near certainty. As she stated, they are often on eBay marked "Chinese Famille Noire Bird Plate" or ect; often mistaken for mid-century examples. (If you are seeking to collect some more of them, they're insanely affordable as they often get overlooked by Chinese collectors who immediately disregard them.. 12"+ antique chargers can often be had for sub-$50)
The Meiji examples for plates and chargers tend to have incised/engraved 4-character marks in a square border on the underside, with the Kotobuki mark applied on larger productions like yours during the late Taishö period (as @imperialfinegems suggested) to pre-war Showa (in Europe they tend to refer to this as "Showa Periode I" or ect from my understanding), or later.
There are earlier examples that have non-engraved markings, or are completely unmarked - but these are not as common and unfortunately my exposure to such pieces is extremely limited in practice, so I would advise the above statements as a "safer" and more conservative route for basing your research off of.
Gorgeous piece! Extremely under-appreciated kiln in the current market, but that could be said for many (most) Japanese pieces currently.
Best,
-JRN

Glad I could be of some help JL - you are kind to refer to it as expertise, but in all reality it's just the result of me being a reclusive ceramics hoarder with too much free-time and internet access..
Careful though, before you know it you'll be too deep down the rabbit hole and unable to escape this awesome and supportive community, and your shelves will start needing more shelves 👍
(I too love just how much I learn here each time I log-in.. Some amazing world-class advice and top notch posters for many broad reaching areas, glad you too are enjoying it as a newer member like myself)
Hope your weekend treats you well,
-JRN
There was an unmarked Yamatoku plate or charger at a local auction, not that long ago, described as Chinese. It sold for £300 either because people believed it was Chinese or because it wasn't the usual birds and flowers - if I remember correctly.
They are generally nice bright pieces and as JRM says, very under-rated. You are lucky to have a vase, as I said, you mostly see plates.
