The satsuma vase along with the imari ones are genuine Meiji - Taisho periods.

The circular carving look's fairly modern and bone. Hairpin or similar perhaps.

The doll looks okay but i am not an expert on these.

The Buddha carving looks Chinese and 20th century....not sure what the material is by just one image....has it been glued together? Would need to see the base in order to determine if its ivory or not.

The blue monochrome is probably modern. However these are extremely difficult to determine their age just by one picture. Even so they still sell for good money.

The blue one with flowers is a copy of a Kangxi Style but yours is 20th Century. The older one's have a distinctive ice crackle effect...the more newer one's have simply done so with the brush moving back and forth.

The monochrome vase looks pretty good to me. The powder blue glaze and nicely trimmed foot rim makes me think 19th C. or older.

@trents the monochrome vase is of my opinion 19th century blown with a straw in the Kangxi style.

@trents,

Nice buy the monochrome vase.

I am not an expert on these but I agree with the other's.

I would definitely ask Peter what he thinks....

With the better pictures I am inclined to think it's possibly early 19th Century, could even be later 18th century judging by the trimmed foot. If so these are very collectable atm.

Hi Michael,

The base looks a bit odd for ivory.

Could you please show us the back of the Buddha?

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the additional images.

The base with that concave look is not what one normally sees on elephant ivory. Those few cracks the base may indicate mono extinct ivory but I am not sure about this as I don't deal with these very often. I only handle a lot of either bone or elephant ivory.

There are no shregger lines which one would likely see somewhere on elephant ivory. Normally towards the base.

I see a couple of black spots. This would indicate calcium deposits and not seen on ivory but definitely seen on bone.

My thoughts are that your Buddha is one of two things.

It's either bone or resin.

A quick hot pin test will confirm if it's resin.

Sorry I wasn't more definitive in my submission to you.

It is not bone or resin.  It is a tooth of some sort.  Maybe a whale tooth, or maybe hippo?  the hollow base is characteristic.

@kirby13,

Hi Brian,

Perhaps you are correct.

But a whales tooth isn't like that base from my previous experience with them as in scrimshaws.

Perhaps it's other?

Mark
