@jrn I think you've made an interesting point that we've all overlooked up until now - that this vase could be 19th c., but not Daoguang. In fact, the comparison Christie's peach vase is listed as 19th c, not Daoguang specifically.
Forget empirical proof - there is none. The reality is that prices are driven by the whims of wealthy collectors who are looking for pieces that represent the highest standards of the style of which a period is know.
So, the question that needs to be answered is not 'is this vase Daoguang,' but rather, 'does this vase exemplify the style of the Daoguang ?'
Since I've not found another of this design, and my stance clearly has been in the minority, it seems that the vase does not have the essence of 'Daoguangness' that might be needed to achieve exception sale results.
Shinigama - I'm sad to hear of your circumstances. I still won't be bidding, but thank you for opening this great discussion. I have some private buying opportunities coming that are just too promising to tie up my funds in thus piece unless I can get it for $5,000 or there about. Also, as a regular seller at auction, I'm all too aware of that the pieces like this sell without any equity left to resell unless you plan on holding it for a few years.
Alas, there still is a lot of time before the auction, so perhaps my feelings will change.
😥 Nope...no bid from me. I was picking up a rather magnificent Japanese screen this week that I bought some months ago (pictures to follow).
Anyway, I've essential swore off bidding on anything I didn't handle first. I fall in love with pieces too quickly, only to have my heart broken when the item arrives and doesn't measure up.
Years ago I dropped $8500 on a 19th c. carved hardwood 9 dragon floor screen from a reputable auction house in Maine. I did not inspect it prior to bidding, but I was advised a reputable expert (who had been a regular on Antique Road Show) had made the appraisal descibing the piece as hardwood.
So, I spent another $1500 on crating and shipping, but once I uncrated it, the screen was almost as soft as balsa wood, and the base was made of plywood.
The auction house refused to refund me, and at the time I did not have the means to litigate, so I ate my loss and literally burned the screen out of disgust.
Thanks for the update on sale price.
Seems their comp was quite ambitious after all (lovely grab for that price though nonetheless)..
@greeno107
Would very much love some photos of the screens.. (your lovely new Japanese one - but the other furiously flamed dragon destruction too if pictures somehow still on hand).
-JRN
@jrn Just posted the screen I just brought home under the 'Favorite Things' grouping of posts. Take a look, but be advised I just took the photos and its really overcast and cloudy, so the gold silk looks rather yellow in the pics.
As for the dragon screen, if I can find the catalog, perhaps there is a pic, but I may have used that as tinder for the sacrificial fire!
@greeno107 Another fantastic horror story from your collecting adventures. Thanks for sharing once again! I really do think you should write a book. Or perhaps turn it into a one man show. I am a songwriter so I could help compose a tune or two for you to sing as well. Cheers! John
@imperialfinegems I feel I've been very fortunate, and I post my mistakes not seeking empathy, but to highlight that nobody is infallible when assessing age, quality, and value - we are all wonderfully imperfect!
