Hi everyone,
I went to browse an auction, yesterday, and came across this. It is 30cms high and very heavy. It is simply described as a prunus baluster vase, no date attempted. There are double circle marks and a stepped foot rim, with a chip exposing white paste. Sorry, I wasn't able to take any photos.
It looks unbalanced - I am concluding it has been cut down. It has been nicely done, it is the unbalanced shape not the workmanship that gives it away. The cracked ice painting is not as good as the best 19th c versions but better than usual, so possibly it warranted the work.
However, there is something about it all that made me wonder, whether a cut down neck is a faker's trick, like deliberately lamping? The painting shows a clear attempt at ice, but it lacks the details and sharpness of the really lovely Kangxi originals. So not the work of a master forger. Also, would a good Kangxi fake have this neck pattern? If I wanted people to think this was a Kangxi vase I would not use this.
Sorry this is a bit rambling but basically, what do you think: 19th c cut down vase or modern fake attempting to be Kangxi? Thanks.
Julia
ps The estimate is £100 - £150 and I am just interested in whether the neck could be a faker's trick, I am not bidding on this.
These photos are not good enough to judge: the neck/mouth appears to be intact /glazed but I can't make it out clearly and without pictures of the base dating is too difficult,
It does not look kangxi , so could be late C19th or very recent .

Hi Julie,
I dont believe said jar is ground down. I think it is based on a much earlier type example from the wanli/earlier period
Said appears to have no wear marks which is a problematic in itself.
I agree with you that the 'cracked ice' look is better than one normally sees on modern reproductions.

Thank you. Tam, I am sorry about the photo but as I said, I wasn't able to take any and this is the only one. It didn't feel damaged or restored around the neck, it was incredibly neat - like it had always been that way. It was only the unbalanced look that no neck gave to a vase in this pattern that made me think it must be cut down.
Mark, an earlier style would explain it, that would make the pattern the incongruous element for me.
Thanks for your opinions.
I think these kinds of jars were used to preserve ginger, wine, pickles and other things, and would be sealed for transport, so the shape of neck /mouth makes it easy to fit a cork or other sealing material.
