John, I would be interested in the article. Is that an American thing to use the term oriental Lowestoft? I have never heard of it, although obviously I am familiar with Lowestoft pieces. Did the Americans like them so much that they named Chinese export after it in a kind of back to front way?
Thanks for the info, My gut told they were good pieces but I didn't want to spend on them without knowing more solidly what they were. With art glass I have my phone-a-friend network I can bounce things off of, versus this stuff it has to be dirt cheap learning examples or some solid comps to compare it against. You all here are my network for info on nicer pieces and I really appreciate it. 🙂
I'm totally fine have passed them, for certain I wouldn't have had a clue before learning here that they were even anything.
The armorial cup caught my eye because I remember Peter mentioning them being collectible, so hopefully my $100 purchase on that won't go to waste. I posted it in its own thread for opinions on it. The entire estate looked good to that they were selling item from which is why I got more and more excited as it got closer to happening.
@julia me too Julia, I honestly had zero idea on what that meant.
@julia I think it was common in the US back in the day to sometimes refer to Chinese export by that name, but probably mainly for the pieces they actually used functionally is my guess.
Sorry, I misread Peter's post. I thought the tag said Oriental Lowestoft, but it was just Lowestoft. Either way, it refers to the same thing, but all a misnomer. Now it's just referred to as "Chinese export porcelain", but some tags will still call it that. My main point there was that Lowestoft is not a company, maker, or origin for CEP. This article was written by Elinor Gordon.
That was fascinating thank you. I vaguely knew there were debates about Lowestoft but I have never found any pieces attributed to them that would have caused me to look into it. I may do so now though, just because it is so interesting!
