Hello!
I was in a local antique store and noticed a decorative cloisonné lamp. I thought it might be early 20th C Japanese because of the art nouveaux style, but he said it was Qing. I am not so sure... Maybe it's not even Asian? Any thoughts? (Sorry the images are rather limited.)
A few months ago he had some interesting Chinese rosewood chairs. Although he's since sold those.
Cheers,
Will
I like the lamp. I think it is Chinese, but really I would want to see the way the top was done and what the base and shape looks like before trying to determine the age but I would think 1920 or earlier. I may change my mind if I saw more of it, but that is my snap judgment which tallies with yours. It could be late Qing so in that sense the seller is right, too.
Is it big, is it expensive?
Hi Julia,
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of the top, but it had clean flared brass mouth. I like the look of it as well, I just can't recall seeing this pattern on Chinese porcelain or cloisonne. But, it's encouraging you also think it may be early 20th C (or even late Qing!) The vase excluding the lamp fittings was 12", so pretty substantial size. It seemed to be in very good condition, with the exception of pitting in the enamels (which seems very common). He was asking $650 CAD, which seemed pretty reasonable, especially if it is late Qing or early 20th C.
The shop is only a few blocks from where I live. So I may go and take a more careful look.
Cheers,
Will
That would be an idea. The things I would look for are a rolled-over rim as I think that would make it possibly after 1920.
Also the little semi-circle borders are a feature that I feel may be worth considering when dating these. Yours doesn't look to have any at the bottom, which I think is good, there may be some at the top. Do you know the border I mean? They are sometimes just a single line or may be a double or even triple line. I can't find any info on those, but I have a feeling that they tend to appear after a certain time (maybe 1900 +/- 10 .) on a certain type of cloisonné but for the moment that is just my opinion
I think the bottom border looks interesting and I like the fact that the curly background look like little fronds on stems. I haven't noticed that before, usually they are just the curls.
Not sure if the price is good as I don't know the CAD exchange, will look it up. 😊
I know what you mean, but not those, Mark. Those do indicate Japanese. I mean the little semicircles, although some are more rounded than others. I found an example, meant to post one earlier but had to run out for an appointment.
I disagree that these are early 20th c but I posted them for the base border, those are what I was referring to:
Having done the exchange, I agree. It is a nice size, but as a resale item, I wouldn't want to pay that, especially as it is a lamp.
He is probably using "Qing" to justify a higher price, but I feel at best it is late Qing. There is quite a bit of cloisonné around from then but maybe not of that size. I would carefully check for small losses to the enamel or dents as they are sometimes hard to spot.
Very nice 20th century Chinese cloisonné vase. Large Cloisonné doesn’t mean more money. The artistry age and design dictates value. It is much more easier for a artist to construct a large piece than a smaller one. Also damaged cloisonné loses a lot of value. It is a decor piece at this point and $500 usd is fare market for such lamps. As Antique without the lamp kit would probably fetch less.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
