Here we see what I mean. On the left, a Hu. On the right, a baluster.

Matter of opinions indeed.

Although the shape of this vase has undergone some alterations over time, the precursor of this form can, perhaps, be traced back to large wine vases of ‘lei’ type - attached image of such  with typical Taotie masks/running spiral motifs, Shang dynasty ...

Earthenware jars based on bronzes vessels of similar shape are known from at least the Eastern Zhou, Warring States period ...

As with Giovianni, ‘matter of opinions’ indeed!!🤔🙂

Thanks for clarifying Giovanni, I wasn't sure what you meant at first but that makes more sense now.  Thanks Avatar, Xin, and Ming for showing me more examples.  I think I'll look to find a copy of that book just to have for reference.

The prices seem to be all over the place for 19th century examples.  If I was to sell it I wouldn't know where to start but that's besides the point.  I'm curious as to why the celadon example at Christies, with the fatter bottom, sold for GBP $21,250, but I'm guessing buyers may have thought it was an earlier example?

I linked below some other interesting examples from the 19th century, one being half the size which must make it more rare.

I also have one more question... The vase has one very faint crack in the glaze above one of the elephant handles, which I actually didn't notice right off the bat.  I looked the rest of the vase over with a UV light and it looks great.  Is this line just crazing to the glaze?  Or would it be considered a hairline?  Do you think it hurts the value of the vase?  And, aren't there ways where you can pretty much make it invisible?  Not that I would mess with it, because it's really one of those lines where you'd have to be really looking for it and catch it at the right angle just to notice it.  Thanks again

Dear Tipton,

those two sales shown by Avatar are a clear, further example of what I will never be tired to repeat again and again: Do not take what happens at the auction houses as a sure reference regarding value, authenticity, and so on; and yes, I am including the more prestigious auction houses.

We can see there two vases, correctly described by Bonhams as Republic period, which has been sold for 730 dollars, which is a fair low price for two Republic vases of high quality.

Then the same type of vase, declared Yongzheng mark but probably later, (read: surely later. When they say “probably” they mean “surely”) that has been sold by Christies for 21,250 GBP.

But the seller has been clever, he added a Japanese box, which almost surely has nothing to do with the vase.

This is what happen at auction houses, buyers are influenced in many ways.

Regards,

Giovanni

Dear Tipton,

it is a glaze crack due to intrinsic stress. Not a real damage but be absolutely sure that Chinese buyers, if you will sell it on ebay, will consider it as a serious defect, especially if you will not describe it.

Regards,

Giovanni

Interesting that the archaic protoform on which the shape of the vase in focus is based could also possibly be a 'lei'. And a sharp observation indeed. I've never thought about that. But there are variants of the 'hu' shape that also come pretty close like these two vessels from Christie's. The term 'baluster' vase is just the western term that generally applies to the shape of said vase. Or at least that's the way I see it. It has happened before however that Sotheby's has missed on the shape of a piece like this jun vase which in my opinion is wrongfully described as a 'zun'. https://www.sothebys.com/fr/auctions/ecatalogue/lot.8.html/2019/important-chinese-art-l19210 In my opinion it is more likely based on another variant of the archaic 'hu' shape like this vessels of the Han dynasty which also has the exaggerated conical base. The foliate rim I would guess is a newer addition https://www.alamy.com/covered-jar-hu-25-220-china-eastern-han-dynasty-25-220-earthenware-with-lead-glaze-overall-47-cm-18-12-in-image240371626.html Or thislead-glazed vessel from the same period in a museum somewhere is perhaps a better comparison because of the more slender elongated body.

I just found this Qianlong marked/Guangxu period similar vase at the Trocadero site that also has an extensive crazing of the glaze, but where the condition is stated as: "There is one chip on the foot rim, no other damage besides this." I was actually wondering if your vase could be considered 'ru-type' rather than 'clair de lune', which would explain the crazing. But you can always contact the dealer to hear what he or she was able to sell their vase for.  https://www.trocadero.com/stores/eslcollection/items/1346514/Chinese-Vase-in-Clair-de-Lune-Glaze-Qianlong-Mark

Thanks Avatar, good find!  I think I will try messaging that seller just for kicks.  I'll be sure to mention the craze line if I ever go to sell it, thank you guys for the help.
