Hello all, I found this box that appeared to be old at first but as I look closer I am seeing white areas coming through in spots.. A cue tip turned red with nail polish remover also but I am not trying to make it something it isnt at all. I wondering if this could be painted wood with plastic molded carving that is painted with red lacquer over the top? I should have noticed the white and put it down immediately but it was still dark in the morning so I couldn't see well. Anyways, appreciate any thoughts. Is this a new repro or an older repro?
Thanks everyone, I always appreciate you guys!! 🙂
Doug
It’s really hard for me to understand why they would try to fake these Cinnabar boxes. But this box looks suspicious I have a authentic cinnabar box it doesn’t look like this. I’m wondering if your box is lacquered resin. Really need to see closeups of the carving it should always be layered.
Thanks guys.. Yes Mark I tried the swab and it turned red which is why I am so confused about this one.. It almost does look like lacquered resin. I am also wondering why the heck they would fake something like this in the first place. Oh well, I am convinced it isn't valuable so I think I'll just put this one to rest then. 🙂 I suppose when you think about the millions of people in China and Japan and all the companies over all the years who churned this stuff out, it makes sense to have weird anomaly types floating around. Unfortunately I didn't see the white resin in the dark this time. Fortunately I only paid 25 bucks for it..
I appreciate the help!!! I will read your paragraph again just to refresh Mark. Thanks so much for all the help you guys!
Doug 🙂
@johnshoe Thank you John.. Yes it seems like it is carved wood at the base level but it also seems like there are several other elements involved as well like perhaps the scene part was attached and then lacquered over in a thin layer over the top of the white color resin or plastic or whatever the base material of the scene section is made of? It just doesn't seem like the bulk of it is cinnabar even though the color is cinnabar color. I am actually thinking of taking a pocket knife and scraping off some of the top layer where the carving was done to find out. There is a corner in one of the pics where you can see the white material underneath the red that has worn off. The whole thing has me scratching my head.. lol
Thank you John for your response!
Doug 🙂
@dcolosio Sometimes certain kinds of more recently exposed wood can look fairly light in color. Have you tried tapping the exposed parts with something to see what the feel and sound is like of that base material? That might reveal more if you have a spot big enough to do that test. You could even try sticking it with a hot pin in one of those areas as well.
@johnshoe You are right, I should do this... I think I will try the pin.. now Im even more confused.. It is flaky white like its made of powdered sugar that is hardened and painted with red lacquer? Here, is a back corner Ive been picking at. I was kinda expecting not to be able to flake it away with a needle like it is... only thing is it is not red, its painted red. I give.... hahahhaha This is testing the limits of my camera skills... Thank you for the help John.. 🙂
Doug
Its almost like the people who made it said.. Lets make it so if they try to figure it out, it will dissolve!!! hahahah
@lotusblack Thanks Brian. I am gonna stop looking at it now. lol
