can you give any info about this piece. any info appreciated. NO MARK. THANKS.
Hi nic,
Based on just the pics you posted I would be inclined to rate this item as modern. Post 1950. Difficult when the pics are nor clear etc.
Is this something you own or looking to buy?
If later then a very low price is applicable.
Mark
Nicho, the to believe this to relatively new and I think it’s Japanese. The large lappids around the lower neck and the four panels arrangement on the body, to me, have a typical Japanese look. Also, the the wire work looks to be a bit shoddy, I would expect better on an older peice. To add to this, there is absolutely no shading to the the decoration, I would also expect this in an older peice or a better quality new item.
Hi Nicho
It is certainly Japanese. This is a very beautiful closionne ( very much my opinion) . I am biased because i love these Japanese cloisonne. It is in excellent condition. The time and work that went into this would make it at least vintage, if not antique.
You have raised a very good question. I would love to know how old these pieces are.
In good condition these can fetch good prices. I sometimes get these cheap at about $20 however they might have some damage or ideally a pair with one in good condition.
Just search Japanese Cloisonne and you will see many BUY IT NOW prices for these at about $60-$80 - $200. I would pay $40 for that depending on the size and consider it a bargain, but that is me.
SD, I will concede to your wisdom on this. I mentioned shading of the infill, would the shading of the elements, say the flower petal changing from a yellow to light yellow within the petal, be indicative of a finer manufacture or age?

Hi Ronm,
This style was made in the Meiji period, in fact the Golden era for Japanese Cloisonne was strictly Meiji era. The truly amazing examples are nearly always Meiji and the silver wire also where you have a very basic background artwork.
This vase could be Meiji but i agree it looks Modern and lacks the high quality associated with high priced Meiji Cloisonne but bea rin mind these can sell for thousand sand tens of thousands.
So while this may not be one of those and while it appears modern, it may well be Antique. Size is important, as these can be very smal and you want them as large as you can find.

Hi Dong,
You seem very knowledgeable about Japanese Cloisonne. Do you think this piece could date to the Meiji period? Unfortunately, it is not marked and in pretty bad shape.
Best,
C.
I have something similar to this. To me it is lovely example of a Meiji era silver wire. However the it is not $10,000 nor does it appear to be from any special artist. I would imagine this vase is Meiji era.
I found some examples:
Very interesting. Thank you Mr. Dong!

My price estimate was the very low end. These are very hard to value. A good artist or slight difference and they can spiral in price. I always hear these classed as vintage by sellers rather than antique, but i think while they are relatively common, they also can quickly be hard to find when you want one and in the long term they can only rise in value.
They are very collectible and so will always have a good value.
Mabe an expert might wander in here and explain this whole Cloisonne business to us. I would like to know if the majority of it is Meiji and what to expect from say a 1950's cloisonne. I know china Still make Cloisonne to this day, so it is possible so do the Japanese, but it is expensive in materials, energy and labour to make these.
