Hope you are doing well and staying safe.
Recently I have got this bitong and the moment I was buying it (it was extremely cheap btw) I was 100% convinced it's relatively new. My first reaction was: not really old at all. I simply liked the carvings and composition packed with lots of interesting subjects. There is quite a lot going on right there 🙂 I have counted 18 men (might have missed one or two), a dragon, shi lion, dear, mushroom, all sorts of interesting things and scenes.
Height 14cm.
I don't like those multiple spots with exposed untinted wood, that is something I'd not expect to see on a genuinely old piece.
What are your thoughts?
Is this something available on aliexpressdotcom?

I have mixed feelings, but I really do like the carvings and composition. If this one was done recently then someone truly skilled managed to carve it. I've tried to capture it in different lightning and I have eliminated that reddish from the pictures, however it's also a matter of individual screen...

@adrian I see what you mean with the less red stained areas and I suppose the seller could have gussied it up with stain or oil before selling, but yes, it is a pretty thing.
People on fb pages are confirming it is machine carved. the giveaway is: parallel horizontal lines. Good thing is it was extremely inexpensive lesson.

Strike 2, glad you got a good deal, place some paint brushes in it, it would better than what I use.
I can't tell the difference with machine and hand carving. I shall study this in detail. My take was slightly different, but the same conclusion, I felt it lacked warmth/patina.

I can tell you that the moment I have picked it up I knew I was holding something very recent. It was extremely cheap as I was buying few other items from the same seller and I thought what the hell, I can learn something new as I was literally not losing any money. Then someone started convincing me it was old but only after seeing pictures without inspecting it in person. So that's why I thought I will ask people and see what they think. I must admit I am a bit shocked to hear they have started using machines (lasers?) now, crafty bastards they are those forgers 🙂 Frankly speaking, I was hoping the worst-case scenario will be as I thought straight from the beginning that it's new but hand-carved, hence still attractive as a piece made by a carver, but now it's worth nothing to me. In my book fakes like this are total rubbish.

Horizontal, parallel thin lines that are going through the length of the whole body. On bamboo we can expect to see vertical lines, not horizontal. With a scope I managed to find them basically all around as there are places either missed by whoever was pollishing it or impossible for them to give it a good polish. Also as they are carved in quantities makers have no time to do each and everyone perfect, so it's easy to spot those giveaways. Now I can see it everywhere 🙂 Touch is also very good if not the best advisor, I think.

Also be very careful with soapstone carvings. They are also being done in good quality using 3D laser.
At first glance they look most impressive until you look further into them.
Adrian, I would use the bitong for your pens etc etc.
