Could you please tell me what type is this? Is it from the western Zhou dynasty? What's your feeling about this object? Should it come with a lid? As for me, I like it a lot. luke

I don't know much regarding bronzes but difficult to judge on this one, rather poor image!!?
But be very careful, as these are known to be faked in large numbers now!!
If possible, try and take some much clear images, including the top, inside, handles, base and close up's of the designs.

99.9% of archaic bronzes for sale from non specialist sellers are fakes.
They require a large sum of money to verify and are best avoided.
On Gotheborg a very knowledgable couple went to exhaustive lengths to establish the authenticity of a piece and after spending a lot of time and money it was confirmed as a fake.
These pieces are 'National Treasures' in China.

my amateur observations are that it’s quite uniform in colour. Maybe too uniform? I’d want to know why the rim has aged differently to the rest. It would’ve been outside/in the ocean for quite a while to develop this degree of all over verdigris? Wouldn’t this mean the decoration on the pot itself be less crisp? Wouldn’t there be more of a build-up of crust and debris in the dips and pits in the pattern where water would’ve collected and sat for a while?
Is this being sold by a dealer? If he believes it’s genuine he must be asking thousands of pounds/euros/dollars?

There isn't enough wear on the jar. Look into the crevices on the heads, water would have pooled into those areas and over time reacted with the metal more imo. The heads look too large for the form of the bronze. There probably should be a lid, How is the bottom formed? In a grid fashion? It looks later than Zhou, 17th century due to the banding, the foot seems too small for the jar as well, its supposed to hold food and liquids which can be quite heavy, the foot needs to be larger.

Hi Todd, thank you for your reponse. As I mentioned earlier If I manage to get hold of this object I will take plenty of pics and share them with all of you here. In the meantime, it is a learning experience for me than anything else.
