Luke, that is interesting, I still feel wary because I haven't seen anything with that amount of green, but I don't know anything about the processes involved in creating this anyway. Why, for example is there no green inside the neck, it stops so neatly. Is that because it is a different metal? Also, inside the spout looks quite white. Could that be the weird deposit of mineral type stuff that builds up sometimes in metal (bronze?) objects? Sorry this is so imprecise, I don't know exactly what I am talking about but I did have a pair of bronze jars that had these deposits inside the lids.
Aside from all that, it has inspired me to look around for information and I came across this, which I thought was quite interesting. Can't believe I didn't know that sometimes, what looks like the spout is where you pour the water in! ?

Nice research Luke and Julia. Another cog in the wheel that is E Asian influences and how they migrate and change.
Luke, it looks like your one up on us as far as your Kendi. If your research indicates it’s the real deal and you like it, then your only option is to purchase and enjoy.
Ron
Hi Luke -
A very good piece of research, well done and I also hope this goes some way towards possible identifying this object.
NicDan makes a good points regarding the images and also the faking of items for the tourist trade, I understand that such practices have actively been going on for some years throughout Indonesia. This is especially true in Java, due to the Majapahit empires strong trading position during its time. Numerous Yuan and Ming shards, some of very high quality, have been uncovered and these are extensively faked to sell on to the unwary.
Best of luck with you continuing research ...
Stuart
Hi everybody, I finally bought this kendi. I am pleased with it. Now I can provide good pictures of the kendi. Nic was very right that the initial photos from the sellers weren't good enough for any proper analysis. As of the object, it is quite heavy for its height (3.875 lbs and 9.5 inch tall). Go ahead and have a look at the new photos I took just now.
Julia, thanks for the link. It's very informative.
Ronm, yes I am enjoying it 🙂 Thank you
Nick and Stuart, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Please have a look at the better photos I provided. I hope they will give you more insides and new clues.
Hi Luke,
The colour is much more consistent with aged bronze in your new photos.
I would suppose that it has been exposed to the elements for a long time to achieve this level of erosion?
Nic
Well, with these new pics the oxidation certainly looks genuine to me. It scarcely looks like the same piece. Amazing how differently two photos can depict an object.
take it with a grain of salt
The verdigris is almost certainly genuine, but was it achieved through weathering (think Statue of Liberty) or the application of an agent e.g. acetic acid?
Nic
Ah yes, good point Nic. Something to consider.
take it with a grain of salt
Hi Luke -
Well this just goes to prove how subjective images can be - these new images make a real difference!!
You can certainly see the detailing in the overall designs and the surface verdigris looks genuine IMO. I would concur with NicDan comments regarding weather this is natural or artificial, and this may need some further research?
However, I'am pleased that you were able to acquire and are now enjoying ? ?
Stuart
Like, as others have mentioned, the new pics make a world of difference. You can now see natural variations in the Verdigris. And at three pounds plus it most definitely is not spelter. I think you did well and got yourself a genuine old antique. The time frame I do not know. Well spotted. Now the question is were was it found, buried in the dirt of an ancient temple, found in a forgotten corner of some old structure? I think your next step might be a trip to a Museum or a professional opinion from an expert, maybe Peter. Could well worth the $12 (US) for a written opinion.
Wow, this looks really interesting now. The patination is so much less than it initially appeared and much more natural. Do let us know if you find out where it is from.
Thank you very much dear folks. Yes, I enjoy every time I see this kendi, and it makes me want to hold it and examine every detail of it. Surely I will go on with my research and will report my findings. Kindest regards, luke
