Hello All,
I have had these 3 small plaques for over 30 years think they came as part of a lot at a weekly sale at a local Auction. They are 15cm x 6.5cm. They have been cut down as you can see from the nibbled edges most likely to fit in a frame or small screen. The birds are quite well done. I especially like the ducks. Think they lack a little detail overall which suggests to me they are from the late 19thc or more likely 20thc, would appreciate members opinion as to a date for them. Not sure why the have a numeral painted on their backs.

That's a bit creepy. 😀 Could it be to do with the 15cms?
Do you think they are deliberately cut down or they just want to give that impression? The reason, I ask is the leaves or grasses on the ducks one, don't go all the way to the edge. Unless these are pieces that were cut down from a blank piece, maybe it broke, then decorated.
I think they are very pretty, I like them a lot. The style of the first one is quite 19th c although the birds may not be black enough? The ducks one reminds me of a lovely plaque I was tempted to buy recently - it was a copy or in the style of a renowned artist and I can't remember the name. I am not saying that is his work, but the style may help with dating.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I guess we will never know what their original size or purpose was. Perhaps for a cabinet or other furniture item.
 I have always assumed they were cut down to uniform size to fit a small folding screen made from Lacquer or bamboo, such screens usually of not great quality and easily broken and therefore not long lasting made for the tourist trade.
However have always thought the plaques them selves were of quite good quality. I have noticed the one with the orange painted birds seem to have part of their tails cut off. I was hoping that from the painting style somebody might be able to suggest a date for them.

Thanks can't ague with that, mind you I would be happy to find a jar or vase painted with such birds at a post 1950's price of course.

The two ducks represent love and marriage. They were often given as gifts at weddings/other.
Your absolutely spot on. They are difficult to purchase cheaply. They are very popular atm regardless of age.Â
I was very fortunate to pick up this 42cm jar from LJ weekly sale (only bidder) about a year or so ago. Guangxu period. In need of restoration around the lip otherwise in good condition. One day 🤗.

I can't find what I was looking for, but it would have dated from at least 1940s / 50s so would tie in with Mark's dating.
It was interesting to see how many plaques had similar edges; it made me wonder if maybe removing them from a frame or furniture might do that?Â
