Here is the second item. I purchased all three at the same estate sale. Looking to identify the origin and possible time period. I believe it is a covered rice bowl. I can not seem to find it online. There is also writing on it. It would be awesome to know what it says. I tried to translate on Google but, had no luck. There are 5 children playing. The dimensions are (with lid) 5-3/4" H X 4-3/4" W. The bowl itself is 3-1/8"H when the lid is off. Foot rim is 3-3/8" Wide. There do appear to be a few rust spots. If I missed anything, please let me know. I apologize in advance for the pics. My lighting is horrible. There is a chip on the handle of the lid and the item is pretty thin. Thanks again everyone for your help!
Jessica
Looks like a Republican era rice bowl....but unfortunately I cannot verify. Will have to wait for one of the experts to chime in. Shape seems nice.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
The particular tone of the gilt around the rim makes me think it could a bit newer than republic, but let's see what other say.
The boql is Qianjiang style rendering. I think pretty good quality without knowing the artist...chip in the finial of the cover is unfortunate. Likely it has a date, but I'd guess circa 1920-30's based on syrong colors (early qianjiang used diluted colors) and gold gilt.
Don't pair with that stand.... not a good fit and the bowl is plenty nice without it.
I really appreciate the incite. Its extremely helpful. I had searched and searched but didn't know the proper name for it. I knew the chip hurt its value when I purchased it but I love unique items so I saved it! Maybe one day, I will find another lid. 🙂 thanks again!!!
Hi Jessica, in South East Asia the form is sometimes called a katmau. I think it’s a good quality Republic piece. If I see it correctly there’s a 1917 cyclical date in the inscription. This would fit perfectly with the painting style in my opinion.
Birgit
@shinigami Thank you soooooo much! Can you read what the rest of the inscription says? Also, is the red mark the artist? I tried top translate in Chinese but maybe I'm using the incorrect language.
Thanks again!
Jessica
Hi Jessica, sorry I can’t read Chinese. I’m still trying to grasp the cyclical dates and only succeed now and then if they are easily legible.
Birgit
Very nice! But definitely not a rice bowl. Nor, though they frequently have matching covers, a teacup - neither a rice bowl nor a teacup would have an unglazed rim.
In addition to the year 1917 that Shinigami has ably identified, I can say that it was inscribed in the winter in Tianjin (port city near Beijing). The inscription is "The osmanthus gives off its fragrance." Also, the manufactory is the Yusheng Company of Tianjin (it's possible that the porcelain blanks came from elsewhere).
What kind of dish would it be since the rim and the foot rim are unglazed? The other items I listed yesterday also have unglazed rim's both top and bottom. All three are shaped differently and I believe from different era's.
Here are the other items that don't have the rim nor foot rim glazed.
@hayesaccounts The first piece has a Jian ware look and finish glaze while not exactly looking like a hare fur glaze, but it might be a place to start looking, but I have no idea of whether it is old or new. The foot of the second bowl coming to a point is interesting, could be a good point, but I had a little bowl evauated with the foot coming to a point and it turned out to be mid-century Seto but it was not a blue and white. The second piece intrigues me more, hopefully someone will have an idea about your pieces. Sometimes it is worth the 12 dollars to have Peter satisfy your curiosity on the identify service. Goodness knows I have some decorative value only pieces but I don't have to scratch my head and wonder about it any longer and sometimes you luck out. Best, Sharon
