Sworders Asian Art - Nov. 6. Lot 23 a longquan yuhuchun, ming dynasty sure looks tempting, but there are many other very appealing lots with low estimates in the sale. Sworders are reputable, aren't they?
https://www.sworder.co.uk/auction/search?au=797
Dear Corey,
Yes, they are reputable.
I had a quick canter through their catalogue - some nice things are coming up, and the estimates are competitive. It seems that they go in for estimates of the 'come and buy me' type.
Regards,
Alan
ps I might also say that any auction house that offers a guarantee of authenticity, or that offers to refund a buyer if it subsequently turns out that the item sold is not authentic and can be satisfactorily shown not to be, has street credibility. I didn't check out Sworders terms of sale, and have gone solely on my awareness of their reputation to date, but have a look for yourself, and if you find some such guarantee, you can feel more comfortable.
I 've had no direct experience with Sworders , but quite a bit with other English regional auction houses, and I would suggest extreme caution - as Alan mentioned on another thread, reputable sellers can sometimes offer clear fakes , either through lack of care or judgement , and this applies especially with Chinese antiques.
Lot 20 , the longquan vase and cover in extremely desirable form , for £3000+, does not look right to me , for example , but I could be wrong
Also , their buyer's commission is an extortionate 23% plus VAT
tam
Dear Corey,
I've checked what Sworders say about Deliberate Forgeries in their terms of business. You might want to check clause 15.5 in their Seller's terms, and also clauses 2.5 and 13.2 in their Buyer's terms.
It is clear that they will countenance a claim for a refund should the item purchased be inauthentic and turn out to be not as described in the catalogue. However, you would need to act swiftly in that case, as claims must be entered within 30 days of the auction.
In practice, this leaves very little time for a purchaser to mount a claim in the event of inauthenticity being detected, but it does offer some limited protection nonetheless. The larger auction houses like Christies or Sotheby's will usually offer much more time in which a claim can be made. Also, in order to make any claim stick, you would need to be able to call upon recognised expertise in the field and provide the auction house with a documented statement of opinion, not simply say, 'I showed the vase I bought to my next door neighbour who didn't like the look of it'! Arranging for expert opinion is also likely to take time and could be expensive, unless you're already on the inside track with some established auctioneers or sellers and can call on them quickly.
So, it's likely that you will be in the auctioneer's hands unless you can readily muster the support you will need in the event of your wanting to make a claim against them.
That said, don't be put off if there's something you like the look of. You could always run it past people here on the Forum before the auction for second or third opinions too.
Regards,
Alan
On lot 23 , the one you mentioned, there is no photo of the base , so it's impossible to make a sensible judgement , but a real Ming longquan yuhuchunping , in good condition , would be worth much more than £1200-1500
tam
Thanks for replies and the advice. Regarding lot 23; I just came across this Ming longquan yuhuchunping with carved decoration at Sotheby's Australia with a $1,500 - $2,500 estimate, so after all the £1200-1500 estimate of Sworders vase isn't as advanteous as it might sound...
So we've now got the results. Lot 23 sold for £1,300.
The longquan jar and cover sold for £2,900.
I really wish I had followed the sales of this particularly auction more regularly since I heard about it prior to 2015. I have been searching around the web for hours after hours and then I just coincidentally come across this one: Lot 129; A famille rose vase, early 20th century, apocryphal red six-charecter seal mark of Jiaqing on a white base and decorated with a composition of a tree peony over a flowering branch of magnolia, a lingzhi mushroom, and a flowering branch of crab apple positioned exactly like the similar composition of a certain 'yangcai' gallbladder vase with a six-character red seal mark of qianlong on a white base that was talked about on this forum. Even the deciduous tree host of the lingzhi appear to be the same species. Copying something imperial...?
