Dear Forum members,

On Saturday, 3 November, Adam's auctioneers in Dublin are holding their first ever dedicated sale of Asian art. I've had a preview of the lots that are coming up for sale. Some are important, and will be likely to command strong prices. But apart from those lots, there are also more affordable ones that should offer something for everyone. The general quality of the sale is good, and Forum members might be interested to check it out.

You can access the sale catalogue here:

https://www.adams.ie/ASIAN-SALE/30-09-2018?gridtype=listview

I've also asked Peter to look over the sale for himself and to upload the sale catalogue onto Bidamount.com if there's enough space for it to be included there.

Regards to all,

Alan

Hi Alan.

I will be going to the Auction and it looks like a very expensive Auction. However will be just fun to check out all the different items they have.

I am going to Hermann tomorrow evening, and while it's not specifically an Asian Art auction. They are some interesting Items and they have a large lot of Qing plates.

Hi Short Dong,

Can you please take some pictures of the Yuan dynasty jar at the auction there? Want to see some details.

Thank you.

Dear Short Dong,

Unfortunately, I can be at the Herman Wilkinson sale but I will make sure I get to their next Asian sale. I don't think the date of that has been announced yet though. While there are some high-end lots in the Adams sale, some of the others are in a more affordable price range. I will be at the sale, so there's a chance I'll meet you at it if you're there too? Do introduce yourself if you see me.

All the best,

Alan

Dear Xin,

I think that if you contact Adams yourself directly, they will provide you with high resolution images of the Yuan jar. They have the technology to do that.

Best wishes,

Alan

Dear Short Dong,

Sorry, a typing error, what I meant to say was, I can't be at the Herman Wilkinson sale, not that I can be at it. I need extra coffee today!

Hi Alan

No problem 🙂

The next Asian Art Auction at Herman & Wilkinson will be on the 22nd of May. Seems Prices are rising on this side of the water, Peter Coombes had felt some gentle indications that the Asian art markets was trending down. Guess we are at the tail end it.

I think the last Asian Art Auction at Hermanns was the last real chance to get some great bargains. I think the Antiques market is trending back up here in Dublin.

Hi Alan,

I hope you had a great day at Adam. I could not make the auction although I did have a look at the online catalouge. The Japanese Ceramics sold very high, the wooden display table went for 240 euro which was reasonable and i saw a cloisonne vase sell for £13,000. Certainly no bargains in the Satsuma.Very high prices The beautiful Satsuma Ryozan went for £1000 euro. There was better deals on the Chinese Wanli.

The Japanese woodblocks all seemed to do well also.

I think this was one of the very few items that sold well under the estimate, many items that did not reach estimates were passed. Interesting Auction,

Sold for 150

LOT: 220

A 'PHOENIX AND PEONY' JAR, SHUNZHI (1644-1661) of ovoid form painted with a phoenix in mid-flight amongst peony blooms and foliate scrolls, picked out in iron-red, green and yellow enamels,...

Dear S-D,

I was astonished by some of the results at this auction. The Yuan peony jar made all the money, but the Qianlong cloisonné fish bowl sold for a mere 32,000, which is an absolute and utter steal. Sotheby's have a related one coming up for sale next week, and their estimate on it 100,000 to 150,000.

I looked very carefully at the Adams cloisonné bowl. I have no doubt whatsoever that it was an authentic Qianlong product. I made a few post-auction enquiries. It went to a London dealer, who apparently had been prepared to bid way higher than what he ended up bidding, but he simply had no competition. As a matter of interest, I was the underbidder!

I'm sorry you didn't get to attend, it would have been good to have had a chat, and also because really, there were some extraordinary bargains to be had today. I confess that I didn't keep the restraining padlock on my wallet as I'd intended, but bought lots 74, 98, 111, and 153. You can check online which ones they are if you're interested to see.

Best wishes,

Alan

Looks beautiful. Had a high estimate of £60,000 euro. So you must have really unleashed the wallet.

Well done Alan.

This was a wise investment because you can only trust to get something like this at the big Auction House's.  That is a very beautiful dish, the more you look at the better it gets. You have a treasure now for sure to add to your collection.

So it is possibly an imperial dish. Wow!
