My eyes see a vastly different quality of rendering between the vase being sold by Doyle's and the British Museum example...flowers, faces, manner of brush stroke, color, and mark....
I can't screen capture the photos from the British Museum, but just flip back and forth between Doyle's and the British Museum vase.
Am I wrong?
I agree -just to be clear, I mean the museum one is far better. On the Doyles vase, the decoration has relied on rather lazy-looking stippling to give form to the landscape with some rather odd results and the face colouring gives a strange perspective, the lady with flowers in her hair looks to have been badly stung.
It may simply be a different technique, or maybe they are from different periods, or maybe my inexperience stops me seeing the quality, but if I bought this, I would not feel certain I had spent my money well.
Sale is today. Doyle has added an essay regarding the vase where they also talk about the vase at British Museum and compare the less refined painting of their vase with the painting on two falangcai vases in the imperial collection.

I have a record of similar shaped so-called gallbladder falangcai 'european subject' vase sold at auction in Macau for more than 100,000,000 HKD but unfortunately neither the result or the authenticity from that auction is trustworthy. But I think that even in said condition the vase at Doyle could be worth a few million dollar ...

Good heavens! No way would I have paid that!
Doyle has updated their page and commented on the sale. $2,450,000 with premiums.
But this sale is interesting for me because I - as you know - have a Qianlong marked gallbladder vase of slightly different proportions that is possibly of the period. I first thought it was 'yangcai' but after investigating deeper it seems more likely that it is 'falangcai' which is even more precious and potentially more valuable.
And one the interesting aspects I noticed in my research was that the palette of colors of the enemals is identical to those of the falangcai vase sold at Macau CITIC Auctions.
I just went back to that thread started in July 2018 and fortunately one of the links with that vase posted there is still working! Here it is. Sold for HKD 138,000,000. Wow.
I can't say if it's authentic or not however but Giovanni commented it looked fake to him. Either way - the results for that auction should not be trusted.
An additional link with close-ups hopefully making it possible for people here to judge the authenticity of the vase. Sadly there are no pictures of the reverse side. But the painting of the vase at Macau looks much closer to the vase at Britsh Museum and the neck part is also very similar.
@avatar I think the high sale amount is worth celebrating....in about 6 months when we know if the buyer pays.
If the sale goes through, that is a great indication that the tolerance for less than perfect condition pieces has really expanded, which is great for those of us out there picking around for lost treasures.
The piece sold in perfect form would still not be as good as the British Museum piece in terms of rendering. And, building the comparison of the vases righ in the listing of the Freeman's vase I think actually highlights the differences as much as it draws similarities.
So, I'm hoping this is the new trend...exceptance of damage pieces at this financial level would be fantastic if sustainable.
Falangcai vases of this kind are the rarest and most valuable porcelains of the Qing dynasty. Most of them are in museums and doesn't come to the market. Even the golden pheasant vase had a significant repairment but still sold for $200,000,000 HKD. I would guess that if the vase at Doyle was profesionally restored it could still bring between five and ten million dollars.
