Since the forum has been a bit quiet lately I thought would break the silence with some auction reviews, etc. https://www.cguardian.com.hk/en/auction/auction-list.php?id=147&page=1&sort=&order=¤cy=hkd The items included in said sale at Chinese Guardian seems fairlly resonable priced. This Ming period jun bowl for example is quite rare for example and also sold well above its estimate even though it seem to have some damage to it. https://www.cguardian.com.hk/en/auction/auction-details.php?id=201795 A similar bowl sold at Christie's for HK$4,240,000 against a HK$800,000 – HK$1,500,000 estimate. It is stated in the lot essay that there are only four bowls of this type. https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-fine-and-very-rare-jun-type-purple-5848773-details.aspx This 'guan-type' mallow petal washer also seems very conservatively estimated. It has even been in the Carl Kempe Collection. I would have expected it to go much higher than it did. I'm still unsure what they mean with guan-type though, since the actual kiln involved in its making is not specified. If it is a real Yuan to early Ming guan kiln production, it's a give away IMHO. https://www.cguardian.com.hk/en/auction/auction-details.php?id=201814
While I cannot provide an opinion about the bowl listed I would be very careful about dealing with these people.
I have in the past viewed a number of items supposedly by members of the 'eight friends of zushan'. These include Xu Zhongnan, Wang Yeting and He Xuren. Just to mention a few.
It is my opinion that most of these so-called masters from the Republic period are in my belief attributes and not genuine despite bringing high prices etc!

Really? I didn't know that. But do I know that some of the jades sold by them has found their way into the major western houses.
Hello avatar
I am not certain if this information has been previously posted on the forum, but last year the Beijing Palace Museum uploaded high quality images of a significant number of pieces in their collection which you are able to zoom in on, especially the Ge and Guan ware.
They show pieces of both Ge and Guan ware, with finely potted and thickly potted examples from both kilns. From what I have read Guan ware tends to have a single shade of crackle in the glaze, whereas Ge ware can have either 'iron wire and golden thread' twin crackle or single shade crackle. Most of the other major Museums with these wares in their collections seem to have the finely potted pieces, so I believe that the Palace Museum collection is helpful by showing the thicker potted pieces also. These thicker potted pieces seem to have the foot glazed, whereas the finer pieces have the unglazed foot showing the dark brown body. I have also read that it is thought that Ge ware was made during the Yuan dynasty, but the Museum has dated their pieces as being made during the Song dynasty and so are with their Song ceramics. It has also been written that the glaze of Ge ware is like 'oily skin'.
The link to the Song dynasty section is,

I find that a mobile device using Google translation on the search bar works well.
Kind regards,

Hi Corey,
If you compare the Xu Zhongnan plaque sold at the said auction house lot # 1133 sold for HKD $108,650 with a known example sold at Christie's lot # 185 sold for £43,750 along with another example posted by myself on this forum of a plaque that was at Sotheby's Australia that I purchased late last year (from Aalder auction) you will note the following.
The calligraphy is not the same nor is the quality of the depiction of the bamboo and rockery in my humble opinion. It is an attribute and not by the hand of the master Xu Zhongnan.
This is just one example. There are of course numerous others. In fairness due to the large amount of copies being produced in China some are of very high quality almost better than the masters themselves. The one at cguadian is in my opinion not one of those. It's fairly obvious that it is not by him.
Sorry I can't post said pictures as I am using a mobile phone and I am having difficulty in down sizing images etc.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
