Dear All,
As some of you may know I am interested in Asian wood items. I came across this seller in one of my searches. They are not trying to deceive date wise they give 1950 t0 1999 for most things. All the wood items have a certain sameness in finish and are in remarkable condition. The sellers have very good feed back. Do you think these items are molded then painted to give the wood effect ? You would think there would be some negative feed back if they were molded. The seller has some items of a sensitive nature so if your easily offended don't look. There is a coin or medal from Nazi Germany that I thought was a strange thing to find from an Asian art seller.

Hi Michael,
I have some wood netsuke and also a modern one for comparison. These modern ones are made of wood by using a machine and then finished by hand. They come incredibly cheap and look nice but if you hold them in your hand you notice the difference. The old ones have patina from use and are fully hand carved, they just feel different.

Thanks for your reply yes the main appeal of old wooden items is the way the wood improves over time. When you are lucky enough to see an old item that has been well loved and cared for over several generations it is a wonderful thing.

Thanks yes I have been looking and looking even managed to look at a few items on a bigger screen with better resolution and I am almost certain the items are wood. As Brigit said it is possible today to get a CNC machine to carve out something and then finish it by hand. Having said that there is one item that I like and the seller is offering free postage. If I can get it for about AUD$25.00. Who know my grand children's children might be pleased I did.
