Hand painted apparently. I wouldn't touch this for $10 and I suggest nobody else does. Be careful folks. I've seen a couple of dishes which really look okay so you have to look hard. They are there......Best wishes

It would help if you explained what you thought is wrong with this charger. I'm totally unfamiliar with and uninterested in Japanese porcelains. The colors are rather brilliant and the charger has a recent look about it. However, the sellers, Shangrila Antiques in Amsterdam, are very reputable and I have bought a few really beautiful plates from them from the Kanxi, Yongzengh and Qianlong periods. In their description, they describe the period of this charger as "twentieth century unknown" and that could mean any date between 1901 and 1999. I think the latter (c. 2000) is more likely, but they are not trying to midlead there. I would recommend the owners, Bob and Freek, to anyone and Peter has their items shown in the Buy It Now section every week on bidamount.com. As with any item, however, one has to do due diligence and ask questions. Bob and Freek answer all messages promptly and I have always found their opinions to be forthright. I have never regretted any purchase made from them. They have the largest selection of Chinese plates I have seen anywhere.

I have to say, I have never seen a Meiji period plate with that backstamp. If I saw that, I would be thinking later 20th c. On the other hand, I know a lot of people respect these guys. I think there has been a mix-up: where are the animals they mention?

I know nothing about Japanese porcelain, but the plate, described as hand painted, looks printed to me. Look at the enlargements on Ebay. Only the red filling color and the blue are hand painted. Probably they used the wrong pictures for their entry. I also know them as very reliable and having really nice (although sometimes overpriced) items, so I think it was just a mistake in this case.

I agree the plate is probably not hand painted and is likely almost new. Bob and Freek have a huge inventory, however. So it's quite possible there was an error here. I also think their items are often somewhat overpriced but they are generally willing to consider all reasonable offers.

I don’t know anything about Japanese Imari but I have collected transferware for many years. In pottery circles, this would be classed as ‘hand finished’ or ‘hand coloured’ rather than ‘hand painted’. The basic design is printed but the item is hand finished with enamels and gilding.
