Just came across these items from the same seller. What do you guys think of the authenticity of the bowls?
Never mind. Just saw the red bowl listed in the weekly news letter. Peter said it was real. I will be posting a picture of similar bowl with Kangxi mark. Please take a look and let me know what you guys think.
Please take a look at this bowl.
Hi,
I am not experienced enough to be able to make a judgment on the basis of those photos but someone else will be, I am sure.
My feeling is that if I had the choice of both bowls, from what I can see, I would go for the ebay one. That is because the bowl you have posted doesn't look quite right. The rim looks thicker, more like a lip and the mark looks wrong - it may have been more convincing had it been ringed with double circles but then it would be out of proportion to the base?
This is all just my novice opinion so I hope some one will come a long with more expert comments.
Best wishes,
Julia
Thanks Julia. Are there any general rules when double rings will be used and when not? I have definitely seen both. For 3 rows by 2 columns marks there are more circled ones but I have definitely seen ones without as well.
Please take a look at this bowl.
It's modern copy.
Best regards,
Xin

Thanks Xin. That’s what I thought too. When I saw the Qianlong marked bowl on EBay I remembered this Kangxi bowl so I suspected that the Qianlong bowl is later copy as well. But Peter said that bowl was real piece. So could you point out the difference between these two bowl? Mark? Foot rim? Top rim? Glazes? Thanks.
Hi John,
I am not sure on rules about the double rings. I can only say that their absence here raised my suspicions about it being Kangxi.
As for other things, for me, as a novice, the rim looks almost as though it has been painted white and is more of a lip. The rim on the other bowl is far more subtle and refined. The footrim looks a bit chunky, too. Maybe the wrong colour as well? I am not so sure of that but hopefully Xin will come back and explain things more accurately.
Last thing, I am not sure about the overall shape, either, but it is hard to tell that from your photos. It is really helpful to be able to see the curves, outline, silhouette whatever of a piece so that accurate comparisons can be made as shape and balance are important considerations.
Best wishes,
Julia
Hi John,
All pictures of this qianlong red bowl on eBay are not good enough for authentication. I can only tell what I see.
The form is ok and the colour somehow too. But the scratches and the light are quite irritating. The texture on the glaze is quite typical for Kangxi, Qianlong (Mid-Qing).
About foot rim, a reference below. The body material is white. That's all. I can't see how smooth it is. And the typical light brown or orange yellow protection glaze (which you can see at the foot rim of the red plate below) is missing. And the mark is also a hint. The maker started it well and at the end the last two characters he got headache (I guess :P) and made two mistakes. Do you think it is ok for the emporer? I don't think so.

A similar one.

About the modern Kangxi bowl. The foot rim told me already everything. Too rough, too thick. About the mark, the calligraphy looks lack of strength.
So don't touch those things. I hope I can help you somehow, maybe a little bit.
Best regards,
Xin
