There was a discussion in another thread about how export wares are not so often copied or faked and they are therefore safer to buy - here is a bowl being sold now on ebay that could be a new item in the C18th export style....not sure ...... it'd be interesting to know what you think
tam
Hi Tam,
I don’t know as well as you do. My only comments are that its missing its lid, and that 6 1/2” diameter does not a large pot make. But maybe that’s a language thing, and in the UK she has it correct.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
I looked at this pot a few days ago.
I passed it by because it didn’t ‘feel’ right. To me, it looked like elements of it were transfer printed then possibly embellished by hand finishing? There are clumps of bamboo just hovering in mid-air with no apparent relation to anything around them.
Having said that, there is a blue tone to the white glaze, there do appear to be cut marks to the foot and there is evidence of iron where the glaze meets the unglazed foot? So I thought early 20th century at most?
But I don’t know nearly enough to know for sure, but I’m delighted that I knew enough to pass it by!
Nic
Yes it looks modern. But it‘s no copy of an export piece. It looks odd with the elephant handles, they don’t really fit to what otherwise looks like a copy of Kitchen Qing. Not convincing at all.
Birgit
This pot has motifs from different eras. Quite a funny mixture. I don't think it's old.

yes , I agree the elephant head handles are odd , and the missing lid also, if the thing is new. The base looks wrong to me, and the cut marks on the foot look too regular and mechanical , also the pitted inside is not good.
tam
I don't think the handles are elephants, they look to be a dragon or something swallowing something else (fish? its own tail?), I have seen them quite often and am never quite sure what I am looking at!
Is the pattern a version of the one commonly found on ginger jars ie this one:
The exact style, quality, age varies quite a lot.
I think the pot might be late 19th/early 20th c but I do find it a little too shiny and new looking, however, that could be the light/photos.
Julia
another item with the blank faces and flying birds - you might be right Julia , they are following a chinese ginger jar original , but the more I see of them the more confused I get (same as for the prunus jars ) . The handles could be snakes swallowing their tails .
The double neck vase above is more attractive..... but also looks new to me
tam
I saw that double moonflask a few days ago. I assumed it was new. He also has some negative feedback. Even the buyers that rated the overall transaction as positive criticised the postage saying they were charged £40 postage but it actually cost the seller £19 to post it. That could be due to estimating postage I guess.
Nic
That cost is high. I always weigh items and add that figure to the dimensions in the description so that people can estimate postage charges for themselves. Even covering every cost associated with p&p (sending fully tracked, adding in packaging, petrol to the post office and ebay's fees) the charge shouldn't come to anything like the amount being asked, it is a small item!
I wonder if the high postage is a way of including a handling charge? If it gets returned and he reimburses the seller, he will have made some money to cover time spent listing, packing, sending, re-listing.
The handles on the item that is currently under discussion is very clearly a dragon.
On the issue if postage, if you believe that is high how about the elephant silk seat cover that Peter mentioned in his weekly address that was listed with US$500 postage. Outrageous since the said would not weigh more than 4 kilograms at most.
Always an issue how sellers nominate and calculate P&H costing. I have on many a times ask for a breakdown. They always seem to reply with the notion that different carriers charge differing amounts. Like in the US you have USPS and DHL just to name two.
Mark
For $500 p&p I would expect the item to be hand-delivered by the seller, presented atop a red velvet cushion and a string quartet playing The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba when I opened the door.
here is another ginger jar , which I found on the Royal Collection website (UK) , which is very similar to the one posted by Julia. What's interesting about this is that it's at the lower end of the quality of items in the royal collection , but it was dated quite specifically to 1820-40, if I remember right, based on old inventories of objects in the royal palaces. So it's a useful reference piece.
tam
The first flask, (sorry to be behind the pelaton here), has a 20th century foot and has no signs of age anywhere at the bottom. They haven't even faked any. Its just 20th century and probably post 1950. Best wishes All.
