9,5 cm across. Very nice. And purchased for a very nice price too ...
Hi Avatar,
Nice looking jade bi disc you have posted. Very sought after colour.
Did you buy this if you don't mind me asking?
Mark
Yes, I bought it. It was from the same seller who had the Guangxu marked yellow ground famille rose bowl we talked about here but unfortunately I have now lost track of him. He definitely had interesting some things in his listings. I posted it mailny to see if I can attach files again. Seems like I have worked it out this time.
Speaking of yellow jade of the Han dynasty. This yellow jade belt hook is up for sale at Christie's now. Last time it was on it sold for around a million dollar and to my knowledge this was the highest prices ever paid for a piece of archaic jade in the west at the time. And with the price increase we have seen for archaic jade in recent years I'm really excited about how high it will go this time. If it wasn't for the corona-virus I would guess it could go up around the five million dollar mark ... https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/an-exceptionally-rare-and-important-yellow-jade-6285199-details.aspx
A stunning jade buckle with superb provenance!
Mark
I wanted to show some more pictures of yellow jade carvings I have on my phone but I've got difficulties uploading them. But I managed to get out six pictures of this outstanding yellow jade vessel presumably dating to the Han dynasty sold in Japan some months ago. When I first saw it I thought it was just another modern replica but when looking closer I could tell that the carving was very finely done in a high grade yellow jade material with clever use of the russet inclusions and a light calcification from burial. It sold in the thousands but if this piece had have a provenance it could probably sell for at least a million dollar if offered through one of the majors. But as usual the problem is the lack of provenance ...
Love the simplicity of the disc you bought Avatar.
The Christie's buckle is just superb and I am sure it will do very well despite Covid.
I love the small collection coming up at Dreweatts and they too have a Ming Fish Dragon Disc with a beautiful colour and skin.
All the best

Hi JJAA,
Possibly nice piece from Dreweatts. However the pictures provided by the auction house are terrible. They are blurry!
Mark
Yes, it's a nice jade pendant available at Dreweatts. It has some similarities with a yellow jade dragon pendant discovered some years ago in a family's home. I just checked to see how closely it resembles but it's far from unfortunately. I actually think the one at Dreweatts is a little overpriced ...
Good Day Mark and Avatar,
@Mark, I have to agree on the images comment! I saw the piece and it has the most beautiful skin and patina, the jade is like butter.
@Avatar I had the opportunity to buy the disc some years ago but Christie's put a $40 000 valuation on it (if you send me your details I can send you the info). I now have a second chance at it but unfortunately my situation changed with Covid 19 and my pocket can't stretch that far at the moment.
Regards,
JJAA

Hello,
The Bo is fantastic, love the colour of it. Jades and stones are not my strongest field in terms of Oriental antiques but I must admit I am quite impressed with the quality of work on this piece! I am absolutely not an expert here as I am simply lacking knowledge. However every time I come across items like that I am looking at 2 very general aspects - overall harmony and style and in those 2 aspects your item fits in just spot on. I can't see any faults here, anything that would put me off - just the finale of the vessel - wonderful and exactly as it should be. I am quite sure the fakers would fail totally trying to mimic that form. Personally I think that fakers are always failing to deliver the complete harmony - the more they are trying to copy one particular element the more they fail to compose it with the rest of the piece and they end up with loss of harmony.
In terms of no provenance that puts the auction houses off... Tell them it is coming from a privet collection and it has been in your family for generations 🙂 Which one you've tried so far?
Kind regards,
Adrian

The yellow jade vessel is a 'dou' rather than a 'bo' I think. But yes, it is absolutely marvelous. And yet another example of a "million-dollar-piece" slipping" through my fingers. You should see some the archaic bronze items that was available from the seller who had it. It was kind of items that were too rare and precious to be real but to well made to be fake. Just like the jade vessel. I haven't really tried with any international auction houses, only local auctions like Lauritz .com and Bruun Rasmussen and they are simply not good enough. I've had several authentic items rejected by Bruun Rasmussen because they thought they were fakes, also many jades.
@ JJ AA. $40,000 sounds a little hefty to me but I see there is a provenance. But I wonder why the owner have decided to sell them at Dreweatts if Christie's was interested. But it's sad with the Covid-19, otherwise I would definitely go for this piece. It has similarities with a piece at British Museum that is also carved in a similar material, celadon jade with russet skin, possiby wrongfully dated to the Qing dynasty? https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/A_1885-1227-92
Oups! I hadn't it was stated in the description the jade I just linked to is a Qing dynasty copy of a much earlier example.
@Avatar, you post such beautiful pieces, thank you - the example from the British Museum is really lovely.
Yes, the Christie's valuation was for $40 000 in 2012 but the market was really buoyant back then. I have handled the disc and it is really exceptional, will be interesting to see what happens on the day.
All the Best
