Hi All,
I would first like to say a thanks to @wiley I didn't even realize that Waddington's had an Asian art auction taking place so I jumped in and left a few bids and this is one of the pieces I won on - quite a steal for the price imho. I find Japanese art is quite outstanding, outdoing Chinese sometimes. I know that Peter often talks about it but unfortunately a lot of people shy away from Japanese art since the big crash (I suspect Chinese art will also have this happen to it if their economy crumbles) and the market isn't that strong for things except the extremely high end material.
Anyways, it is a mixed metal Kagamibuta plaque, Meiji period and one of the first ones I have purchased. Netsuke is more of my area of interest but because the market has gotten SO expensive and SO flooded with Chinese fakes, it's been more of a pain than a pleasure. It has been made into a brooch which is also an old brooch. The back has a few inscriptions, one with the owners name who I suspect the brooch was made for 'MAYA B. 1909' and other one some Japanese characters (last photo - 3 angles - hopefully they are clear enough as they are just scratches) that I can't read, maybe I'll cross post this into the help section of the forum. A bit of the gold is worn and a few dents but otherwise in good condition. I'm sure at one point its original bowl was probably damaged and turned into a brooch. Anyone who knows Japanese themes have any idea of what's being depicted or what it may represent? They described it as a Longevity plaque which I can definitely see the crane, pine and tortoise depicting that part but why does the crane have a 'top hat'? Let me know your thoughts.
D.
PS I would be interested in seeing if anyone else got anything from that auction also? Please share!
Congrats. I got something in their sale earlier this year. By the way, Peter rates them not high, only D. So I have been pretty careful.
Has a classic T & C clasp, so good age to the brooch.
@zhtail Thanks! Yes I noticed a lot of their Chinese stuff was fairly modern pieces BUT from what I could see they don't try to deceive, however they do attach similar items to lots of Christies/Sotheby's and Bonhams even if they aren't identical. I think it depends on who's estate they come from, there was some decent things though. I watched a (broken) jade Ming dragon belt plaque go for like $10k - even though at Christies they go for $4-6K. They are also excellent with additional photos in normal light but they are usually uploaded very close to the end so you definitely need to request condition report. I also got a MASSIVE carved wood stand that no one else bid on, really beautiful and finely carved. Unfortunately I didn't realize how big it actually was until I won it (14" dia x 9" H) - I don't have a large enough vase to put on it...yet 🙃
@sharonp That is how I knew it was an antique brooch by the clasp so the plaque must be at least late 1800 early 1900. Antique jewelry is actually more of my thing than Asian antiques so getting something that's both is a win win for me. The plaque is quite heavy though so you'd have to wear it with outerwear.
@fuantiques yes, I totally agree with you on their honesty. So I go with provenance than their judgement in their sales. 🙂
@fuantiques When you wear it, pierce the fabric then poke it through two sides of a rubber band on the backside of the fabric before piercing and closing with the C clasp, that way if it comes loose from the C clasp, you won't lose your brooch, unless the rubber band breaks, there are also safety guards, but rubber bands are economical.
@sharonp Thanks, that is an excellent idea.
Wow, this is a beautiful object! I think you’ve been quite fortunate with it. I just love all of the figures, and am particularly drawn to the turtle drinking what looks to be tea or wine (?) from a cup. How amusing! Just a wonderful objet d’art!
@charlotte Thanks Charlotte! sorry for the late reply I didn't notice this post until now. It is a strange but interesting combination of characters and I am sure someone with knowledge in Japanese mythology could shed some light on it, I especially like the turtle and balancing crane with a "top hat" 🤗 .
@fuantiques Thank you Dann! I hadn’t previous looked closely enough to see the top-hatted crane! Gosh, there is so much happening on this small object that it’s just fascinating! I couldn’t find the dimensions and I think I read every post. Would you mind sharing the diameter size? Just very curious…thanks so much…
@charlotte The diameter is 1.5" / 3.8CM. I am sure there is a meaning to it all but the price was just too good to give up on such an interesting piece!
