Hey Folks,
I have to preface this with a special thanks to our ever-so-wonderful Julia ( @julia ), who assisted me by shipping this from France, since the seller would not, which is a most impressive feat given how large and heavy this thing is. Without here I would certainly not have this.
This thing is awesome. It is in nearly perfect condition, minus a few small losses to the enamels, and was amazingly never drilled out.
I am dating this as late Yongzheng to very early Qianlong, as the paste and the shape is farm more consistent with Yongzheng styling but the enamels are just slightly more consistent with Qianlong_maybe 1740-50). I did find a pair of vases that were listed as Kangxi, with identical enamels and decorations at one of the majors, but the sale was years ago and I disagree with the dating, it just doesn't fit for me.
Most intriguing is its size, at 40cm with out a lid(probably would add 9-10cm), its huge. There are of course much larger ones out there, but are insanely expensive, as I imagine back in the day this one was. Also presumably with a 5-8 others, one would have had to have been quite wealthy to buy this to begin with.
If anyone comes across a lid do let me know, though I'll be listing it long before I find one most likely.
Also showing it with two others, of the more standard size, the underglaze blue and famille rose c.1780 and the imari c. 1730-40.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Thank you, Jeremy! 😊 As I said at the time, I have never posted anything so big, heavy and fragile! It was quite daunting!
I would like to confirm that this really is a very impressive size. I was quite over-awed when I unpacked it!
I should really note that the exact dating doesn't much matter, somewhere in the mid-18th century would suffice, but the features are interesting in general, so the discussion of periods are interesting too.
Here is the ones I found listed as Kangxi, the pink suggests later to me, but for completeness thought I should include it. Plus this is the most similarly painted bird I've found.

also these listed as Kangxi

And these as 18th, but its neat to see the differences in the layout of enamels in the whole set, pink versus green banding and such

@julia I could imagine how challenging it would be for this size. I have a small jade still stuck in Paris thepackengers in the past two months. Don’t know what is going on with them, so I may have to fly there to retrieve instead. I should have asked for your help instead.
That’s some global teamwork good karma for Julia.
Congratulations to you both on its safe arrival, it is beautiful.
A piece to be proud of, dear Jeremy. In many cases I find the combination of Batavia brown and famille rose not really appealing but in your vase the colors harmonize beautifully.
Birgit
Hey Birgit,
Thank you so much!
I know exactly what you mean, I normally don't like the Batavia wares, I think the monochromatic brown is heavy looking. I think it is perhaps the unevenness of this one, or the lighter color, and the extensive panels that break up the brown, and really looks attractive to me. I must say the blue enamel flowers also really stand out to me as an interesting choice. Definitely need to find at least a nice wood lid for it before I list it, just seems deserving of that.
Jeremy
So glad some of you are coming over to my opinions regarding these wares! I think photos often don’t do them justice. I compared your base to the bases of my Batavian Garniture set; exactly the same. The size is rather astounding. Totally agree with you about a wooden top which will give a more finished look, especially if you find an older one with a piece of jade or coral.
Hey William,
Thanks! I think yours, super stunning examples btw, are also that early period of them, where the Brown is broken up by more panels, and the colors are richer. Some of the Qianlong and later ones are just blobs of brown with one small "window" and sparsely decorated. I will definitely look for a stone mounted lid, that would be awesome, but I am having a heck of a time finding just a plain wood one. hahah
Cheers,
Jeremy
