Julia and all, in Canada it is taught that the war of 1812 was just a minor fuss compared to the efforts against the Parisian French. And of coarse it is a Canadian centric view. America attacked what was called upper Canada at the time and burnt down York town (Toronto) and so it started. Knowing the expansionist leanings of America we fortified our boarders and took control of Detroit and Chicago and many other what were at the time, outposts in the boarder wildernesses. Also, as it is taught in Canada we were long time allies of the native populations who were uneasy, worried about American expansionism as well into their lands.
In the end it all comes dow to America invaded Canada. Canadians, English, French and Natives beat America back. And that’s our version.
Interesting that the squabble reached as far as Canton.
but we digress from the topic of this thread, the cider jug, a very nice jug indeed with a great story, and even better research in gleaning it’s history.

My apologies for opening up this can of worms - I took a different route than usual with this little write-up... I will likely revise the War of 1812 section for my records. I will keep it more China trade related for next time 😊 Regardless, I thought it was an interesting and engaging topic and appreciate the learning experience.
@bartholin I liked it very much, as you have been taught by now, every single word matters and has repercussions. I spent an enjoyable time thinking back on that legal history class and the duty of defense of unpopular clients and Adams' defense of the British soldiers. I am glad that third year afforded me the opportunity to study something I was interested in studying. Enjoy your last semester. Sharon
No need to apologise, John. I know nothing really about American or Canadian history, my interests lie elsewhere, but if nothing else, this thread has sparked my interest. When I have time, I think I will have a closer look.
Thank you, Sharon. I'm very happy you enjoyed it. I am embarrassed that I fumbled on Lake Erie - I normally read with a more critical eye and catch on to what I perceive to be revisionist history. Now that I've looked more into it, I've caught another revisionist history mistake that hasn't been mentioned yet. I wish I could edit the first post but it's too late. Needless to say, I'm happy this happened here in our friendly community rather than elsewhere. My last semester is filled with interesting classes (at least to me) - I opted to focus on patent courses. If everything works out, I'll be practicing patent prosecution and general IP litigation in Dallas.
I do have a number of new armorials that have come in that I've been very slowly working on write-ups for... they should be interesting I think. I'll do better with them. I'm still waiting on a book to arrive so I can follow up on an interesting lead I found in my research for one of them. It is an armorial of a British China trade merchant who wrote a short treatise with his reflections upon East India Shipping. I can't wait to read that one.
Thank you, Julia! I know very little about Canadian history, but I did enjoy reading about the ships Henry Eckford designed and built with this little research project. Now I have much more reading material to go through! I did not enjoy learning about history in grade school, but this newfound China trade interest has kindled that new passion.
