Hi all. I wanted to share my favorite buy of last year. It is a small collection of Sawankhalok or Sukhothai ware (I can't tell the difference) that I picked up at a local charity shop. It probably came of a shipwreck. Or at least some of it. Like the brown jarlet, where the glaze is completely eroded away on the side that was above the sand. It could well be from the 16th century. But I love it. It always amazes me that you can find so much history in the most unlikely places. In the same buy there was also a Chinese, provincial made, Wanli period jarlet in blue and white with a deer decoration on it. I suppose it all came from the same collector, but wasn't recognized by the person who donated it to the charity shop.
A lovely collection. I'm a huge fan of South East Asia pottery. I also discovered a Ming jarlet in a mixed lot that I bought. It was found in Indonesia together with the Sawankhalok pieces.
Birgit
Here are my examples of Thai, the Sawankhalok man on bird's true chocolate brown can be seen in the base photos, the others were too lightened to show details, the bases usually go up like this one and not covered in chocolate glaze. The Sisatchanali boxes 15th-16th century are featured in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide and the photo of the Excavated kiln at Sisatchanalai (kiln 61) is featured in John Guy's Ceramic Traditions of South-East Asia, Oxford University Press. I think your box is more likely an excavated piece rather than a salvaged from sea piece. Best, Sharon
I love your examples, Sharon. I am envious! I, too, am a huge fan of SE Asian pottery.
Are there any books that you would recommend in particular?
Thank you,
Carol
@cashflowz I only have the one I mentioned by John Guy, there might be something on Bidamount Reference bookcase, I'll plug in Southeast Asia in the search and see if any of those catalogues cover Southeast Asia.
There is a good one titled Catalogue Southeast Asia Ceramics, the black covered one comes up and a string of about 4 others that mostly have bronze Buddhas on the cover.
P.S. the second catalogue in the string does have pieces from the Nanhai wreck and the surface does look similar to David's piece, so maybe it was sea salvage.
@cashflowz I would recommend this classic work that's also really affordable

Birgit
That sounds interesting thanks for recommending it. I had a look around and found a copy more local to me.
It is even cheaper on Amazon US, but there is also a free version (probably first edition) on the link below, but you do need to create an account.

Thank you, Sharon, Birgit, and Julia! I have some interesting reading ahead. I really appreciate your help.
Carol
@thunderchild David, on the eight page of the black covered Catalogue of Southeast Asia ceramics is a brown jar same shape of your Sawankalak jar, catalogue calls it a caramel glaze but more chocolate glaze to me. 😋 The one in the catalogue has nine incised rings at the top and tear shaped drips onto the unglazed bottom part of the raised bottom rim and it has the same looking handles as your jar. Just go to Reference bookcase and plug Southeast Asia into search at the top. Sharon
David, the Nanhai wreck pieces are in the last pages of the black catalogue, must refer to the Royal Nanhai wreck of the 15th century. The other catalogues that come up on the string are not relevant to your search.
@cashflowz Go to Abebooks page and do a search on the book Birgit and Julia mentions, there is one available for about 8.00 with free shipping and some others fromm 11-29 + nominal shipping. Sharon
@sharonp Thank you, Sharon. I did find a copy at a very reasonable price. Abebooks is a good source. I also recommend bookfinder.com. They search many websites, including Abebooks and ebay.
Carol
@sharonp @julia @shinigami That's a lot of information that gathered after my last visit 🙂 Thanks so much. I have a lot of looking up to do later tonight. The information on the Royal Nanhai wreck looks very interesting. That man-on a-bird piece is very nice, by the way.
