I hope everyone is doing well. I would like to share my latest purchase - a very rare export armorial plate for the French market. This plate is unrecorded in any of the current literature but the plate will be published in the near future. It was likely ordered by a prominent French sailor/naval officer and features two recumbent lions on a bank, supporting the armorial crest under a marquis crown. It's also interesting that the plate is modeled after 18th-century European silver forms, and has a double ring of gilt vines.

I acquired it from Nicolas Fournery, who I highly recommend. I've read a bit about Chinese export porcelain, but this is my first entry into western subject matters, and I particularly enjoy the fact that it has a connection to a renowned sailor. Here are some photos:Â

That's quite a score! Attractive decoration with cute lions - they look like toys or strange creatures relaxing and the one on the right is stretching his legs - and an unusually shaped rim. It's great to have an antique item and know for whom it was made, makes for a good conversation piece.

Thank you for taking a look! The almost toy-like lions really drew me in on this one, although my partner saw the plate and said they look funny. I think it adds to the charm of the plate! I'm really enjoying this area of collecting and research. Will be on the lookout for more interesting export pieces.

Thank you, John! Peter said it's likely that the service over the centuries was divided up over generations where pieces were subsequently lost, broken, or forgotten over time. He said that the fact that it hasn't been recorded yet means that the rest of the service is likely no longer around, or maybe one or two survived. I hope a couple are still out there - it'd be great to have a pair eventually.
Thank you John for recommending this dealer. He has beautiful things and is located in the EU which is very convenient for me. I just bought a cute little Kangxi teapot from him. Was afraid to enquire for the price first because that usually means expensive. But it was really affordable.Â
