Hello Everyone,
So I live about an hour outside of Philadelphia and I remembered Peter making a video in the heart of COVID about the collection at Philadelphia Museum of Art. I went there as a kid, but always went to the modern and contemporary art section. Boy was Peter not kidding! Amazing pieces, including a fully built exterior scene, a scholars studio, oh and just your casual Ru ware piece (complete with a poem by Qianlong). Pretty crazy stuff! They even have some modern Asian art, such as a set of plates by Ai Weiwei. Enjoy the images!
Threw in a Peter Paul Reubens massive oil painting, because why not.

@ming1449 I thought that as well for some of them. I don't think that they dedicate the attention from a curatorial perspective to the Asian art collection that they do to their American/European/Contemporary collections. I did not even know that they had such a substantiative Asian art collection, however their collection of Rauschenberg's and Twombly's are pretty common knowledge.
That is amazing that you know the donor for the piece! I thought it was one of the standouts of that gallery!
The past ten years or so they have, like so many other of the major American museums, used their Chinese porcelain collection as something of a cash cow by sending many, many pieces to auction. The great majority of the Asian ceramics collection, that was mainly donated in the 19th and early 20th centuries, stopped being displayed in the second half of the 20th century as other art objects took precedence. When the Chinese started buying back their patrimony, it was too irresistible an opportunity to pass up. Besides, the original donors were long dead.
@william I wish my local museum would sell a piece or two to me! They've got a few falengcai pieces worth a fortune... poorly displayed, and most certainly undervalued by the attending patrons.
I actually just went to this exhibit over the last weekend. Definitely a great experience for visual learning, but the way they threw everything together instead of a timeline walk through like I expected was a bit rough. The scrolls for example were hashed together from various periods in the same room, modern was separate but not really at the same time. Same for the potteryware.
The Immersion rooms they built around the style of pagoda internal (room with the massive suspended scrolls) was neat since that was more period centric and helped build a story together at the same time.
Very awesome experience, had a briefly brunt experience with the ticket entrance staff from the rocky stairs side but it was great overall.

@greeno107 I have a museum locally with summer palace treasures they keep locked away from view in their basement. They don't even want them but are not able to sell due to the original terms of the donation. It's a shame.
