Nice display you have there Sharon. Quite the book enthusiast it would seem!
Something I learned today was that valuable or collectable books should never be stored/displayed upright. Apparently it places too much strain on the spine/other over time etc. Always have them flat and away from heat/moisture.
In this week's newsletter from Peter he mentioned a highly recommended book titled 'Chinese porcelain of the republic period' by Simon Kwan.
The book just sold for £206 plus shipping. Peter thought it would sell for 200-300. However this current book is a reprint from the original clay and brush publication of 2008 that was limited to 1000.
The revised edition (same as one on eBay) is still currently available through ' Muwen Tang Fine arts publications Ltd in Hong Kong for 880hkd (£92). plus shipping. I bought one late last year. Truly a must have reference material for anyone interested in Republic porcelain.

Hi Sharon, being a bookseller I love seeing crowded bookshelves in other people’s homes. I keep a lot of stuff in front of books too.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
I didn't know you are a book seller. Perhaps you can help me with one.
I have a copy of the complete works of Shakespeare. Leather bound with gilt and marbled inside cover. Published in either 1928 or 1932. I can't recall exactly etc. It has its original cardboard cover and the book is in absolute pristine condition. Like it's never been read or only partially even opened.
Tried looking it up various times over the last few years but to no avail. Nothing like or in this condition etc.
Mark
Thank you Mark and Birgit, yes I have heard about stacking them and believe me, I have plenty horizontally stacked all over the place and many of my books are in cases with glass doors. At this stage, it is just about just getting them off the floor, bibliomania is a fine madness.
Hi Mark,
what a great Shakespeare edition! Sorry I can’t help you with an appraisal, I’m no antiquarian. There are sites like Abebooks or ZVAB where you might find similar editions or get an idea of the price requested. There are also book fairs especially for antique books.
Talking of books JE Nilsson from Gotheborg recommends investing 10 percent of your collection budget in books about porcelain. I think that’s a good advice though I myself have probably invested 3-5 percent in books. I still didn’t buy „Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum“ ($2500-5000).
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Thank you for your reply. Very much appreciated. I shall one day try to figure out what it is worth. I was told a couple of years ago by a book collector/other that the box was worth more than the book itself and that was the first one he had seen for that particular issue/publication.
Good advice on collecting though etc. Unfortunately due to space restrictions I only buy the top reference material. So atm I only have about 10 books on either republican porcelain or jades. My most expensive purchase on reference material being the Simon Kwan book. It's also probably the most used/viewed etc.
I do from time to see some very desirable books on offer. One set I really wanted recently was the limited double edition on archaic bronzes by Jessica Rawson. It sold for $275. Currently selling for $900+. Fortunately I live nearby to the state library that I often visit when I have spare time. Their collection on asian antiques is extraordinary.
I dont blame you for not forking out $5000. That's a big call in my opinion. I do like to buy reference books but only at bargain prices if I can get them. With the exception of course the SK book that I paid retail for.
Mark
Yes the Simon Kwan book is great, I have that too. There’s a meta search engine for books that you might find helpful. I use it when I want a certain book as cheap as possible. It’s www.eurobuch.com, they also have an app. I don’t know if there’s an English version but it’s more or less self explaining.
Birgit
@shinigami Good search engine. Thank you Birgit !
My next book is The detection of fakes - Allen
Michael
In furtherance to my earlier post on Simon Kwan's book on Republic period porcelain I submit the following amendment to said post.
The original edition by Simon was published in 1990 and was limited to 1000 copies. It was published by Clay and brush. It is now highly collectable and priced accordingly at about $1000.
The book sold on ebay and referred to by Peter in this week's newsletter (May 15) is not the original publication of 1990. Simon Kwan published a updated new edition in 2008 also limited to 1000 copies. It was not a reprint because the pictures were rephotographed with new information.
In my opinion this new edition is well worth buying directly from the muwen tang publisher in Hong Kong for $880hkd while you still can. It will in time become collectable and pricey just like it's predecessor.
