If you are into Chinese history you might consider starting a collection of Chinese cast coins. These are available at reasonable prices (a few Dollars each) and are available from reliable sellers obtained from shipwreck and riverbed sites. They were cast in large quantities and have expected wear and in some cases are found in clumps on the seabed. The fun for me is cataloging them with a chart, and the Southern Song examples in particular are often found with a numeral on the reverse indicating the reign year of manufacture. Imagine holding a coin in hand from Tang, Song, Ming times. All it takes to start is a binder, coin holder page, coin flip mounts, and you are ready to begin. It also helps to have a catalog that identifies all that is available online. ?

thanks for the interesting thread. I didn’t know they made coins that early. I bought some 19th century ones to make a Feng Shui charm (yes, you may laugh) and they still looked the same after all the centuries, really fascinating.

A great idea, would ideally suit people located in Asia. However is there not a tradition or rather a superstition that Chinese people do not like to collect ancient artifacts or is is that they feel it is bad luck to collect artifacts from tombs and grave sites dug up whilst building the railways and roads in China.
I do not see a problem with collecting old coins but i would also draw the line at collecting artifacts from Tombs and graves and feel they should be kept in a local museum close to where they were found.
These are found in such great numbers that they remain affordable today even back to the Han Dynasty. Many of mine are from shipwrecks. Hope I am able to inspire a few of you!

Yes , but you must be very careful , every Chinese street market has someone selling 'old ' coins, because they are very easy to fake . I certainly wouldn't buy anything ebay unless it was a genuine shipwreck piece, with provenance.

You are correct tam, must make sure to only buy from reputable sellers. There are some out there and once you find them stick with them.

I believe the Chinese cash coins were cast rather than hammered.

I use to collect gold coins way back in the 80's through my shop I had at the time. Had a highly sought after collection until my robbery/armed in 2001.

Hi All,
Just noticed this thread. Tourists visiting Thailand, Bali etc sometimes bring these back for gifts to friends. They often end up in Charity shops and can be brought cheaply. Theses two were received by us as gifts back in the 1980's and have kept them for no other reason they are supposed to bring good luck. Might be away to increase your coin collections at little cost. Sorry about the bad photo's.

Interesting examples. All of the coins that are part of your two examples are Qing Period based on the Manchu script seen on the reverses.
There are plenty of facsimiles out there but yours appear to have appropriate wear. And most Qing period coins are found in great numbers. For serious collecting, the trick is not to end up with great numbers of the same coin.
